I have come to realize that I am more akin to being a “Visitor” on the web. Not leaving a social trace. I have been thinking about how to move from “Visitor” to “Resident” (White, 2011) and some of the surrounding personal questions that I am faced with when moving from one direction to the other. One of the reasons that I believe I am more of a resident is because there is a fear of personal merging with professional. In my time, there have been some horror stories of professionals judging the friends you keep. The mere idea of unwanted comments or posts from those friends we keep on our friends lists makes it difficult to merge professional and personal online. I think about even 5 years ago when completing my Adult Learning Certificate online, it was using Moodle and Blackboard but in a forced very structured environment. We certainly weren’t using Twitter, Instagram or Feedly or any other type of “open source” for that matter. We were to post in the confines of the institutional guidelines. I am left with internal questions such as; How will I participate as much as I can? How will I become a part of the online community? How can I post to my blog and make it valuable for others? Will people comment or take what I have to say seriously? Will I get a good grade? In the process of going through the readings and viewing the extensive resources, I am thinking critically of how I will learn to “learn” differently. I find my peers posts very insightful and find it helpful to see and read what others are doing in their respective fields but I am left with some uncertainty. How can I personally let go of the fears of what others may think, to a resident participating in the online community set forth for my MALAT.

Just some food for thought.

References

White, D., & Le Cornu, A.
