Slack.<br \/>\nThe Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines slack in the following ways:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>adjective<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0\\\u02c8slak\\<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080\"><strong>:\u00a0not stretched or held in a tight position<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>:\u00a0not busy<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080\"><strong>: lacking the expected or desired activity<br \/>\n:\u00a0doing something poorly because you are not putting enough care or effort into\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>I want to add a third definition:<strong><u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/strong><em>noun<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><b>:\u00a0<\/b>student-centered LMS for a 21st-century educational context<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tintup.com\/highlights\/slack\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-226 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0004\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/slack-1-300x86.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"75\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0004\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/slack-1-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0004\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/slack-1.png 420w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 262px) 85vw, 262px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 262px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 262\/75;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In doing a bit of research on it, I came across a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/synapse\/is-slack-the-new-lms-7d1c15ff964f#.b19qg229j\"><strong>blog<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by Mathias Elmose (2015), that discusses the use of Slack as a\u00a0student-centered LMS for a 21st-century<em> educational context.<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\">Slack<\/a>\u00a0application has been around since late 2013 and is essentially a messaging app for teams. We are currently using it among our LRNT 523 cohort and playing with the ins and outs. I have been using it here and there for over a year and well \u2026 FUN FUN FUN. There is a lot more to offer than what meets the eye. Here is a video that gives a brief overview of how it works.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9RJZMSsH7-g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mathias Elmose (2015) posted his thoughts on the app known as Slack on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/synapse\/is-slack-the-new-lms-7d1c15ff964f#.b19qg229j\">his blog<\/a>. Up until recently, Slack has mostly been associated with business platforms, but Elmose is promoting its use for education. This brings into the forefront two learning theories \u2013 constructivism and connectivism. Both of these theories help to engage learners in a 21st-century learning landscape \u2013 one that takes the teacher off the stage and encourages digital networking.<\/p>\n<p>(Click on the graphic to see it better)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slack<\/strong> is an interactive environment where you can post, comment, and share ideas. Elmose believes that \u201cit is collaboration\u201d and it will help to shift from teacher-centered to a student-centered learning context \u2013 it will help to build a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/patrickblessinger\/student-learning-communities\"><strong>community of learning<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in the classroom. These communities of learning are necessary to promote opportunities for students to take owner-ship of their learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main Features\/Pros:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interactive environment<\/li>\n<li>Effective and efficient communication tools<\/li>\n<li>Extensive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/apps\"><strong>app integration<\/strong><\/a>(gmail, google hangouts, dropbox, simple poll, skype)<\/li>\n<li>User-friendly interface<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-228 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0004\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/Slack-tag-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"122\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0004\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/Slack-tag-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0004\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/Slack-tag-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0004\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2017\/09\/Slack-tag.png 600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 122px) 85vw, 122px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 122px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 122\/122;\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Open Source<\/li>\n<li>File Sharing<\/li>\n<li>Search function is awesome<\/li>\n<li>Use of &#8220;channels&#8221; to organize conversation topics<\/li>\n<li>Project Management Tool app integration (see list of possibilities\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/malat2017.slack.com\/apps\/category\/At0EFY3MJ4-project-management\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>&#8211; I am trying out Kyber)<\/li>\n<li>Multiple teams<\/li>\n<li>Reasonable cost to go premium<\/li>\n<li>Efficient support team &#8211; I have already contacted them a few times<\/li>\n<li>Mobile device and desktop accessibility &#8211; IOS &amp; Android<\/li>\n<li>Makes communication fun!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cons (In connection to my LMS train of thought)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unlike Samepage &#8211; which I also like &#8211; it doesn&#8217;t have as smooth of project management tools (but this is something that could definitely be added as a main tool in the platform and not just an app you integrate)<\/li>\n<li>It doesn&#8217;t have all of the administrative tools such as rosters, assessment\/testing and grading capabilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It really doesn&#8217;t have a lot of cons&#8230;and although those are big ones for administrative aspects to an educational setting, the ability of the app to engage students in the learning process, in collaboration, in 21st-century digital skills is more than enough of a reason to use it in a classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Elmose, M.
