There are a plethora of available apps for anything a user can think of, and we recognized that to break into such a market, an idea would have to be really unique. Abundant pedagogy, abundant apps! That said, rather than try to come up with an original idea for an app, we settled on structuring the organisation of building an app.

An aspect in Martin Weller’s 2011 article A Pedagogy of Abundance that stood out to us is “moderate scarcity to excessive abundance constitutes a challenge to higher education, and to individual information processing abilities” (p. 234). Searching for knowledge about to build an app was challenging and pointless; there is a great deal of information regarding how to organise building an app, but without the necessary knowledge or expertise in programming, coding, design, and at least some degree of user experience, this abundance of content struck us more as too much higher-level information. Despite the plethora of information, we would have appreciated an expert guiding us, whether physically or virtually, were we trying to build an app.

For this assignment we were asked to compare our experience in this process with assumptions made in Weller’s article:

Content is free – not all content is free and not yet.

Content is abundant.

Content is varied – content is no longer predominantly text-based.

Sharing is easy – through the use of tools like social bookmarking, tagging and linking the ‘cost’ of sharing has largely disappeared.

Social based.

Connections are ‘light’ – as with sharing, it is easy to make and preserve connections within a network since they do not necessitate one to one maintenance.

Organisation is cheap – Clay Shirky (2008, 31) argues that the ‘cost’ of organising people has collapsed, which makes informal groupings more likely to occur and often more successful.

Based on a generative system – Zittrain (2008) argues that unpredictability and freedom are essential characteristics of the internet and the reasons why it has generated so many innovative developments.

User-generated content – related to the above, the ease of content generation will see not only a greater variety of formats for content but courses being updated and constructed from learner’s own content. (Weller 2011, p. 228-229).

The content we used in researching the organisation of building an app was all free and was without a doubt abundant. In addition, there were infographics, videos, wikis, and far more than simple text-based guides. It was also very easy to share our infographic, as well as view those of others who tweeted, facebooked, linked, or emailed their content. We have to assume the material is also socially-based because it is so easily shareable.

Click here to view the Infographic

References

Anderson, T.
