As an instructor and a programming officer, I have been involved in teaching, and sometimes designing courses in the past five years. I found the discussion on ADDIE and the digital age subject very fascinating since I was involved in designing an online course on Business Technology and the new laws of business etiquette in the digital age and learned in through the process the difference digital age has made in business etiquette. I also teach this course at Bow Valley College in Calgary, AB.<\/p>\n
As described by Thomas (2010), ADDIE was created by Royce in 1970, and it is one the most common instructional designs. ADDIE stands for: Analyse, Design, develop, implement, and evaluate. Most of the today’s instructional designs are adaptations of ADDIE. Bates (2014) argued, even though ADDIE has been a model that worked very well in the past, it does not work well for the new digital age teaching because of its lack of flexibility. So, if the ADDIE is not going to work anymore, what can replace it?<\/p>\n
Thomas (2010), maintains that Rapid Prototyping (RP) can be an improvement to ADDIE to make it more current. RP is the design that focuses on creating each lesson at the time based on the student’s interaction in the course other than creating the whole curriculum ahead of time before the course goes live.<\/p>\n
From my personal experience teaching the online Business Technology course, I can say RP can be beneficial in an online course since you could have students in the different level of technical knowledge and this will give the instructor the flexibility to work with each student based on their level of knowledge.<\/p>\n
