{"id":881,"date":"2017-11-16T09:52:10","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T14:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/?p=881"},"modified":"2017-11-16T09:55:20","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T14:55:20","slug":"design-constructivism-and-contradiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/design-constructivism-and-contradiction\/","title":{"rendered":"Design, Constructivism, and Contradiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_882\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-882\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-882 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2017\/11\/education-614155_1920-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2017\/11\/education-614155_1920-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2017\/11\/education-614155_1920-768x548.jpg 768w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2017\/11\/education-614155_1920-1024x730.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2017\/11\/education-614155_1920-400x284.jpg 400w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2017\/11\/education-614155_1920-1080x770.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2017\/11\/education-614155_1920.jpg 1920w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/214;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CC0-Pixabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before I got through reading the first two pages of Bates\u2019 (2014) blog post on ADDIE in the digital age, I immediately got the feeling that a framework such as this is way to prescriptive for someone designing a course and learning environment. \u00a0I think it is great to keep a framework such as ADDIE in mind to keep you on track, but in my experience as a carpenter, teacher, and manager, the moment you define a process for someone to follow you stifle creativity as the individual will become to focused on the framework rather than the journey and the end result. \u00a0I probably feel this way as I fall in the constructivist field of thinking when it comes to course design. \u00a0Bates (2014) notes that the ADDIE model indeed has been criticized by constructivists as it does not specifically refer to the importance of the interaction between the learners and instructors. \u00a0Many other instructional design models exist, but I think that if you choose to follow any of them and build a constructivist learning environment, you should keep a process such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Design Thinking<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Scheer, Noweski, &amp; Meinel, 2012) in your mind as you work through it. \u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Design Thinking <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is based in constructivist theory and focuses on training certain learning skills such as exploration and critical thinking. \u00a0It supports several competencies and follows a cyclical process of understanding, synthesizing, ideating, prototyping, testing, and iterating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One thing that caught my attention early on in the Thomas (2010) doctoral dissertation was that there were many definitions and explanations provided of various design processes and instructional design models, and they all seem to aspire to a practice in which a superior product can be achieved. \u00a0This seems contradictory to me in a sense because while each model or process touts its ability reach a desired goal, in reality the only way to achieve your desired result would be to treat each design situation as unique. \u00a0The context for the course design and the makeup of the learning community is different for every design therefore a prescriptive instructional design model wouldn\u2019t be the best approach. \u00a0I realize that instructional design models are just guides but I think more attention needs to be drawn to the uniqueness of each situation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>References<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bates, T.
