{"id":191,"date":"2017-08-20T23:27:01","date_gmt":"2017-08-21T06:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0017\/?p=191"},"modified":"2017-08-20T23:27:01","modified_gmt":"2017-08-21T06:27:01","slug":"copyright-how-can-we-possibly-police-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0017\/copyright-how-can-we-possibly-police-this\/","title":{"rendered":"Copyright \u2014-\u00a0 How can we possibly police this?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I often wonder when I use images and video in my classes whether I\u2019m violating any laws.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I try to cite when possible and credit sources of content.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Melanie Wrobel&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">session on copyright definitely clarified a lot for me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A few points that I found particularly interesting from her tutorial were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">ideas themselves are not protected, but a unique expression of an idea may be<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">not having the copyright symbol does not mean that content isn\u2019t protected by copyright<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">email content can be copyrighted (if someone attempts to use what you\u2019ve written elsewhere for their own benefit)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">citation my not be enough to avoid copyright infringement<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">there is an attempt at present to change public domain regulations to match US policy, which is when the author dies + 70 years (+50 in Canada at present)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">you can only copy 10% of an audio track (or a \u2018work\u2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">British Columbia is at the forefront of the movement to Open Educational Resources (OERs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">uploading work to the internet is a bit tricky, and you need to specify that you own the copyright to it to avoid it being stolen and re-purposed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re unsure, just go and get permission!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Copyright infringement is rampant, let\u2019s be honest.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The internet is rife with it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many do not know anything about it, ignore it, skim policies before they agree, and have no concept of the ramifications.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Who polices this?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do people outside of academia get caught?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I am by no means condoning the breaking of copyright laws.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m just interested in to what extent copyright laws are being upheld every day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I use YouTube for lots of things, music included.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is so much on there that is blatantly breaking laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How do we police it in this \u2018open\u2019 internet driven world?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This session will definitely inform my academic practice, and I will do all I can to follow these laws.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wonder though about the world on a whole, and how standards can really be maintained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wrobel, M.
