A quick note here to reflect on my experience of inquiry into video based learning through the lens of Cognitive Load Theory.\u00a0 Sunday was a rough day for me, as after allowing an update to the Mendeley software, I lost all my annotations and highlights from LRNT 522-526, including those for all the articles I had prepped for my final deliverable in 526.\u00a0 An eye opening experience for sure, as I, like many place too much faith in cloud based storage.\u00a0 I had to re-read about 10 articles.\u00a0 What a bummer, when I could see the finish line.\u00a0 Mendeley better find what was lost, or their company may suffer greatly from the backlash.<\/p>\n
I learned quite a bit about myself during this course.\u00a0 I do better when I have more deadlines, and struggle a bit (even after years of procrastination) when it’s all up to me to stay motivated and build a plan.\u00a0 I tend to work in bursts, and am still self-monitoring with regards to my ‘presence’ online.\u00a0 I plan to get better at reading and commenting all at once.\u00a0 I tend to read, think, get caught up in life, and then 4 days has gone by before I post or comment.\u00a0 I need to strike when the iron is hot, and get into the conversation quicker.<\/p>\n
My video on cognitive load was also quite revelatory.\u00a0 Comments were made about my voice not being clear, and some mentioned the watermark on the screen as well as the choice of different voices as narrators.\u00a0 This proved very interesting for me, as all of these things created ‘extraneous’ cognitive load, which distracted from the main content and learning situation I was attempting to create.\u00a0 That really shone light on how little things really do make a huge difference when it comes to video, engagement and learning.\u00a0 I often wonder about this with regards to photos, Facebook posts, YouTube etc.\u00a0 What is it that makes certain posts become viral, and others though informative and engaging fall flat?\u00a0 This is a recipe I am still tweaking, and my overall presence through this blog and in this course, though improving, still needs work.\u00a0 I’m not quite gaining the feedback and greater ‘conversation’ I thought I would.\u00a0 Why is that?<\/p>\n
Anyway, cognitive load still fascinates me, and I now have tonnes of knowledge about how to balance activities in video contexts in order to limit load, measure pace, and combine content in visuals, narration and through text.\u00a0 That is definitely growth I’ve been able to measure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
