Property can be public or private. When public everybody can access the property and use it, and when private the access or use is restricted, protected, or controlled. Depending on the nature of the private property the means of protection vary. Some physical properties can be secured with locks and chains, while others can be monitored by electronic devices to protect them. Intellectual property requires a different kind of protection, and that is where the copyright concept fits in as De Freitas (1989) described it:<\/p>\n

The copyright system has by now become an essential component of the infrastructure of modern society, enabling creative people and those who are engaged in the business of disseminating their works, by their creative talents on the one hand and by entrepreneurial skills on the other, to earn a living for themselves, free from dependence upon patronage. (p. 69)<\/span><\/p>\n

This copyright system promotes the creation of work by their authors by providing them a way to remain in control of their pieces, being these: books, articles, paintings, songs, photographs, videos and movies, graphic designs, names and brands, slogans, physical designs, and so forth. In Canada, copyright protection comes into action the moment a work is created (Harris, 2013).<\/p>\n
