{"id":161,"date":"2017-10-04T14:54:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T18:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0029\/?p=161"},"modified":"2017-10-04T20:45:07","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T00:45:07","slug":"assignment-1-relevant-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0029\/assignment-1-relevant-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Assignment 1: Relevant Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A resource I use often is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/\">Mind Tools<\/a>. \u00a0Mind Tools is dedicated to providing content and tools that build user skills in areas key to career success, including leadership, team management, and learning (Mind Tools, 2017). \u00a0The site offers an impressive selection of content and tools that are relevant to students of LRNT 523 and the Masters of Arts in Learning and Technology (MALAT) program.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the category \u201cLearning Skills\u201d contains a variety of interesting and helpful resources slotted into 5 subcategories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Personal Learning Skills (e.g. Mind Maps)<\/li>\n<li>Understanding how People Learn (e.g. Cognitive Load Theory; Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy, The ADDIE model)<\/li>\n<li>Developing a Learning Environment (e.g. Engaging People in Learning)<\/li>\n<li>Reading More Effectively (e.g. Overcoming Information Overload)<\/li>\n<li>Memory Techniques (e.g. The Journey Technique)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Clearly, there is a lot of content applicable to LRNT523, including information on how people learn and on the relationship between learning and technology. \u00a0In addition, there is content that can help us become better students through a focus on virtual teamwork, time management, and writing. \u00a0When taken together, the information and tools at Mind Tools can help us become better content consumers and creators.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Mind Tools, here is a brief list of websites I consider to be of great value to students, researchers, and curious humans \u2013 in case they are of interest to you as well:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/\">Brain Pickings \u2013 An Inventory of the Meaningful Life<\/a> \u2013 A life resource that explores a wide variety of topics, including history, philosophy, and literature\n<ul>\n<li>Interesting content includes: everything\u2026 though a personal favourite \u2018rabbit hole\u2019 is her content on death and dying, including Cry, Heart, but Never Break; and Duck, Death, and the Tulip.<\/li>\n<li>Other interesting, more relevant, content includes: How to Hone your Creative Routine and Master the Pace of Productivity; The Science of Stress and How our Emotions Affect Our Susceptibility to Burnout and Disease<\/li>\n<li>Also check out <a href=\"http:\/\/explore.brainpickings.org\/\">Explore<\/a> \u2013 a companion site to Brain Pickings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessballs.com\/\">BusinessBalls<\/a> \u2013 A general L&amp;D resource with some learning-focused content\n<ul>\n<li>The content is solid \u2013 though the name may have been a lost bet.<\/li>\n<li>Interesting content includes: Experiential Learning, Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy, Kirkpatrick Evaluation Model<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edge.org\/\">The Edge<\/a> \u2013 A blog that explores a variety of topics across disciplines and engages prominent thinkers in the field\u00a0(science and technology are prominent)\n<ul>\n<li>Interesting content includes: Aerodynamics for Cognition, Defining Intelligence, Learning by Thinking, How the Brain is Computing the Mind<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farnamstreetblog.com\/\">Farnam Street<\/a> \u2013 Another general L&amp;D resource with some learning-focused content\n<ul>\n<li>Interesting content includes: Learning by Thinking: How Reflection Aids Performance; When it Comes to Learning, Depth Beats Breadth; The Learning Paradox: Why Struggling to Learn is a Good Thing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youarenotsosmart.com\/\">You Are Not So Smart<\/a> \u2013 a blog that humorously explores self-delusion\n<ul>\n<li>Interesting content includes: How search engines inflate your intellectual confidence, Revisiting how we can escape the trap of learned helplessness, Begging the Question<\/li>\n<li>Why you should read this blog \/ listen to these podcasts, in the author David McRaney\u2019s words: \u201cI didn\u2019t\u00a0know about confirmation bias and self-enhancing fallacies, and once I did, I felt very, very stupid. I still feel that way, but now I can make you feel that way too.\u201d (McRaney).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Are there any great ones I\u2019ve missed?
