He addressed the development and writing of research questions, and what tools he uses when conducting research. He shared his thoughts on how research is distributed using social media, and what he feels are important aspects to consider. Overall, I learned a lot from his feedback and it specifically caused me to reflect more on my blog post from July 4, 2018 ‘The academic research question’.

I described my thoughts on a couple of elements for a good research question. George Veletsianos added to my thoughts when he spoke on the topic about what influence technology had on his research. Among other questions, my team had posed the following ‘Your research is dealing with technology in connection to education, how do you deal with changes in technology while you are doing your research, especially if it affects your research directly? Do you change your underlying research question at that time in order to accommodate the environmental change?’

George Veletsianos answered this very succinctly, and his message was clear when he said ‘Focus on a problem, rather than the technology’ (2:08). I know it sounds so simple, but I think he provided me with important guidance when I start thinking about my own research. I will need to be able to not get sidetracked by the lure of researching new technology tools and how they may be influencing education. Rather, I will need to think about a problem within education in connection to technology and look towards solving it.

In a recent essay (2018) I reflected on the difference between qualitative and quantitative research and how they might be used in relation to my own research. In this essay I identified myself as a good problem solver as I stated

‘Something that intrigues me about research is how Booth et al. (2016) describe the process of research as a problem that needs solving, and while doing so, possibly uncovering knowledge that did not exist before. I am an excellent problem solver, and the prospect of finding the solution to a problem motivates me greatly’ (p.4).

The answer from George Veletsianos spoke to me because of this. I can’t wait to solve a problem using my own research project and maybe contribute to positive changes in education.

References

Booth, W. C., Colomb, G. G., Williams, J.
