I introduced Slack as the main communication channel for my program’s industry project course in May and will extend its use for all the courses in the program from the January intake. I wish to reflect on that, it might give you some ideas and inspiration as well as provide further readings and case studies.

Communication, involving the students, getting them to communicate and work together asynchronously and synchronously in project teams, integrate their field-specific workflow, and use industry tools, while using the environment as a learning space is a significant challenge for every instructor.

The free version of the Slack app has been introduced as the primary communication tool in the current intake of the program I lead for the industry project.

Slack is a web-, desktop-, and mobile device-based platform made for collaboration for consolidating synchronous and asynchronous communication within a group, easily carry on the group and individual conversations, some private and some public within a simple user interface. For centralization, it seamlessly integrates educational, and in my case, web development field related technology tools. The Slack app itself is easy to use on the phone, or any other mobile devices and it fosters an emoji-laced vernacular, which is standard in the web design and development field, and it does well with millennials (Steinmetz, 2017).

A fast track, content heavy higher education certificate program requires different engagement than a degree program with several semesters. To ensure the participation from each learner and successfully reach the learning outcomes, both the instructional design of the learning environment, and the used technology are crucial (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2000). According to Veletsianos (2016), a digital learning environment (DLE) is defined as a digital space or platform that may or may not be intended for educational use. A learning management system (LMS) is used in educational setup, while Slack is the most popular company messaging app. Bringing real-world technology tools and apps into the classroom and using it as DLE, the students will be acclimated to their post-education experiences early on, as opposed to using a conventional LMS that the students will never use for work unless they teach.

Background

Slack was launched publicly in 2014 and is the fastest-growing business application ever, with more than eight million daily active users (Greenwood, 2018). The company also predicts it will be bigger in the workplace than e-mail by 2025 (Woyke, 2018).

Slack is not the only service of its kind, but thanks to its many useful features and user-friendly user interface the web development industry players utilized the tool’s advantages from the beginning.

Advantages of using Slack in the student groups.

The following are some, but not all of the ways learners and educators can benefit from using Slack as a communication platform in student groups:

Students can experiment with software tools and the form of communication they will use in their real-world environment. Based on my discussions with many Greater Vancouver web developer agencies Slack is the preferred communication method the in the web developer field, also at numerous large corporations (Woyke, 2018).

The features of Slack encourage members to see themselves as a team and present plenty of means to assert group identity (Fisher, 2017). Members can personalize emoji, create friendly Slackbot pranks, cultivate inside jokes, create group icon, share photos, bring the group together with funny gifs, which can lead to the development of trust, support, and help when needed within the group from individual group members (Anderson & Dron, 2014).

Slack can be seen/used as a social software system for learning and provides components for social learning: the presence and participation of other learners and teachers. Community of Inquiry (CoI) constitutes three elements essential to an educational transaction: cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence. (Anderson & Dron, 2014).

According to social constructivists (Ruey, 2010), learning takes place in a community setting, where instructors and students socially interact, actively engage in learning, and collaborate to construct meaning and knowledge of a topic from current and prior experience. Slack as a collaborative platform lends a location where people gather, connect, and exchange information, which provides opportunities for people to learn.

Slack increases efficiency in groups using it for communication. A user survey conducted by the company Slack itself, suggests that group productivity and efficiency increase by around a third when they start using the communication software, primarily by reducing internal e-mails and meetings (“The Slack Generation,” 2016).

Slack’s format can enhance motivation to learn. An advantage provided by real-time or synchronous communications is a sense of immediacy. Studies find that teacher immediacy increases student motivation to learn, enjoyment as well as persistence, and cognitive outcomes to some degree. According to Anderson and Dron, teacher behaviours associated with immediacy include the use of humour, addressing students by name, and asking and answering student questions (Anderson & Dron, 2014, p122).

Slack allows channel creation for targeted collaboration for the whole group or smaller teams to focus on different projects, assignments, discussions and topics. Slack channels are like chat rooms or public communication streams, where one can establish multiple channels, join a channel, and set up a channel. The purpose isn’t to create an ‘in the crowd’ feeling but to tailor channels to the most relevant members and to make sure you aren’t filling up people’s screens with messages that don’t concern them. Slack allows direct messages to use for private conversations at any time between group members.

There are countless app integrations for Slack for many different tasks what the students perform during their courses and assignments. In regards of communication and files sharing services such as Google Drive, Google Calendar, Twitter, Polls, project management tools like Asana, Jira, Trello, and hundreds and thousands of industry-specific tools can be pulled into the conversations and made visible in channels, private groups, or direct messages.

All of Slack’s content is searchable from one search box. Conversations, direct messages, files, links, and even content that’s integrated from Google Drive or tweets are searchable content for the participating parties, including the files shared in the messages.

Additional useful features in the app: a digital agent called Slackbot, “target/mention” people directly in chats, set reminders, increase productivity with keyboard shortcuts, and customizable notifications settings.

Additional useful features in the app:

A digital agent called Slackbot is like a personal assistant that can provide more information about tasks, send reminders, or even automated chat responses when a word or phrase shows up.

“Target/mention” people directly in chats. @name calls out people directly when they need to be aware of something and sends them a personalized notification to ensure that messages don’t get lost in the long conversations.

Set reminders for the team instead of using a calendar with email reminders. Automated reminders include meetings, submitting assignments, signing up for status meetings, even for hydration breaks and any other actions normally done by hand.

Customizable notification settings are to receive alert one’s name, or a specific word is mentioned. Notifications can be completely turned off.

Customizable loading messages for daily motivation, or fun (see illustration).

Specific status can be set to let group members know that one is away from the computer or phone and not just ignoring messages by designating the status as ‘away,’ ‘in a meeting,’ ‘out sick,’ or even some customized ones.

Power users can get geeky and save time by diving into the long list of keyboard shortcuts.

Slack provides some freedom for fun customizations, which boost group identity.

In addition to the standard set of emojis available to Slack users, one can make custom ones by uploading image or illustration.

(Kindly) troll colleagues with Slackbot, which be configured to respond to specific words or phrases with a specific message. Example: Slackbot to reply “too much for today… don’t drink more” whenever coffee is mentioned as a potential lunch substitute.

Use the shrug command: certain moments call for the (in)famous shrug emoji, which can be invoked by simply typing /shrug in the message field.

Key concerns

The urge to communicate continuously without off-time, on the Slack mobile app is a concern. Group members can find that the constant notifications can harm productivity due to their interruptive nature (O’Connell, 2008). To avoid burn out in the possible 24/7 communication students need to participate in orientation how to use the Slack notification settings. For focused work, they can use the ‘do not disturb’ or ‘snooze’ mode to avoid getting interrupted by non-urgent messages.

Establishing a clear code of conduct is advised. Students should understand what direct messages are used for, and like any interaction with team members, communication should be kept productive and professional. There should be no tolerance for unprofessional behaviour regardless of the communication channel, but it is still encouraged to have fun and be friendly while focusing on getting things done.

Another concern if the students are not focused, but constantly chat and have fun in their Slack channels, while no work is done.

By having all the team members and the instructor available in their Slack communication channel, some students might skip coming to the classroom, and try to go off the radar. This is only a concern in blended or classroom instructions. To encourage regular in-person work in the classroom, and avoid having ‘off the radar’ students, mandatory weekly participation face-to-face team status meetings can be arranged.

My experience

Slack has had a significant impact already on student(s)-student(s) and student(s)-instructor communication by eliminating the stream of emails, allowing synchronous and asynchronous messaging, collaboration, sharing of information, setting up customized notifications, and integrating web development field specific tools.
