I started out watching the first five schedule symposiums, and I was so intrigued, I decided to start over and take notes for each of them. I completed the week watching each of them; lay of the land track, work in digital learning, end in mind, and the two from 2017.

One of the surprising ideas I encountered this past week, is how to be more mindful when it comes to social media. I was able to listen to Dr. Jaigris Hodsons presentation twice, and her topic highlighted, social media engagement in an age of Cambridge Analytical. When she provided the statistic when navigating a dangerous landscape, “85% of Canadians use the internet, 64% have social networking platforms (Facebook), and 71% of Canadians who use SM are on Facebook (Hodsons, 2018). I have two Facebook accounts, one for personal and one for my wedding officiant business. When I was developing the public business site, it was not a comfortable feeling. This uncomfortable feeling extended to a class expectation from 2015, we needed to create a twitter account #lifechanging, before attending a TEDx show in Victoria BC. Were there choices, was there direction how to protect our identity, these were thoughts when processing through the assignment. Yes, I feel there are benefits being a part of these diverse social platforms, but I do realize we need to be the expert. To teach and coach our students and associates ethical options, provide them with a 360-degree lens to view all alternatives. What could happen? I believe by offering full disclosure and a variety of options provide a safer platform for social media. It is our due diligence to provide the right tool for the right job, knowing the risks, and most importantly, allowing our students and associates the agency to engage on their terms.

The most intriguing idea came from Catherine Cronin, open culture, open education, open questions. I believe most educational institutions and organizations have consciously turned their backs, instead of reflecting how to embrace this social media movement and fill in the gaps. But I do get excited knowing we can teach and train to assist our learners in developing their voice and agency so they can co-create openness and knowledge? I am as guilty, I have built a social media wall between my students and associates. I have gone out of my way to change my name on my sites, so I cannot be found. Looking for privacy, as well as creating a safety zone between professional and student. Catherine indicated, “not sharing open spaces, the unwritten message students often learn there is a difference between formal and informal learning. They develop informal practices where they use Facebook, YouTube for something and Wikipedia and so on. If we say these are not valid sites for learning, the message highlights a need to build bridges between themselves and not enabling that bridge to be built” (Cronin, 2017). Not even the administrative staff from past teaching communities understood how and why to develop formal and informal practices. I do agree we are failing our students, not allowed to practice in an open space where we can engage to find where their digital identity lays. We avoid having open discussions, understanding different social media ecosystems and being passionate about how we can fill those gaps. This is a choice, and we choose to teach, train and live in a bubble where it remains a safe environment. What inspired me, was the analogy provided the way in which to introduce open space by peeling away the layers of an onion. Taking the time building the relationships, coaching open conversations to share and respect what social media they enjoy and why. This allows each stakeholder to be excited and have buy-in, where a plan is devised to start with a small interactive tool and social media space.

Viewing the symposiums and Padlet projects from the graduation year of 2018, provided me with the opportunity to consider new material, expectations, and options which allowed me to get excited having a sneak peek at what my short-term academic future may look like. This premature exposure from MALAT program symposium gets me excited!

References

Cronin, C.
