Melanie explained the current Canadian copyright laws and provided answers to common copyright questions. Opening a new resort, creating internal and external branding such as vision, mission, core values, policies, procedures, and standards could possibly result in copyright conflicts. There is also the social media platforms; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, company website and FH magazine for our homeowners, and guests, creates an added responsibility on our stakeholders and myself to support and uphold Canadian copyright laws.

This copyright information adds value to the MALAT program, students like myself, and to our professional working environments who have the desire to understand the dynamics of copyright laws. The most outstanding question Melanie Wrobel addressed in a collaborative podcast that stole my attention, “If I had a copyright on a piece of my work, and someone used it without asking my permission, how would I ever know about it” (Wrobel, 2016, 10:02)?This is something I have always wondered about, Melanie’s answer to this question was, “you may not know, that is the tricky thing” (10:18).I thought, now what? Melanie also directed the podcast listeners to the different ways to determine if your work is being used outside of the copyright laws, this can be accomplished by using copyright detection software, such as Copyscape or Google Alerts.

I opened a Google search page typing in the suggested site, Google Alerts (10:40). I found a Wiki How to do anything site just for Google Alerts. It provided the user with a ten-step process along with photos how to set up a search engine result for copyright.

Open the website http://www.google.com/alerts (Homepage)

Enter your search (The key phrase you are looking for)

Create the alert (Enter email address to retrieve alert)

Choose source type (Default is everything, or original sample of books, blog, or news)

Choose the frequency (How often the search will cycle)

Select search volume (Filtering topics of relevance)

Click the create alert (Login profile)

Additional search (Start from step 7)

Modify current search (Modify keywords, filtered by RSS feed)

Delete unwanted alerts (Delete for new key phrases or words)

Melanie Wrobel, RRU Copyright Manager and Wiki how to do anything website are valuable tools that supports RRU students and current Canadian copyright laws. They both add confidence and protection by allowing a person to simply type in the key phrases of our written work if we misplaced where the main idea in the written work came from.
