“Technology is serving you, you’re not serving it”<\/strong> (Hodson, 2018)<\/p>\n

Social media has helped turn communications into an interactive dialogue. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are just a few of the popular social media tools available. With its growth, comes the questions of \u2018what is the impact of social media on society\u2019 and \u2018how is it changing the way we communicate\u2019? Dr. Jaigris Hodson is someone who can help shed some light to these questions. Her research has brought insight and understanding on social media and how it\u2019s changing the way people communicate and interact by using computer-assisted discourse and content analysis of large multi-modal online and digital texts (Academia, n.d.).<\/p>\n

I was first introduced to Dr. Hodson on April 16, 2018 when I watched her virtual symposium session entitled, \u201cNavigating a Dangerous Landscape<\/a>\u201d. Dr. Hodson had suggested that to be \u201cSM\/indfulness<\/strong>\u201d, we, as educators, must keep the following three points in mind: (1) \u201cYou need to be the expert\u201d, (2) \u201cYou need to provide options\u201d, and (3) \u201cYou must be the most critical\u201d (Hodson, 2018). These points have resonated with me.<\/p>\n

Dr. Hodson is an educator, a speaker, a social media consultant, a digital researcher and research collaborator on The Social Media Lab<\/a> team. She has published research in a variety of academic and non-academic publications and has recently been featured in the news with our professor, Dr. George Veletsianos, on the topic of online harassment of women in higher education<\/a>.<\/p>\n
