I wish I had more opportunities to attend the sessions from the virtual symposium live instead of having to watch the recording at a later time. There is something valuable about being able to participate in a discussion real time. However, I still felt that the topics, questions, and discussions were incredibly fruitful and left me reflecting on my own experiences. I gravitated towards Dr. Tony Bates\u2019 session. The Surprise! <\/strong>element and using current events to steer the presentation was genius. It reminded me how the nature of education is always changing and the importance of re-thinking how we should be approaching online learning. How issues like cost savings, changing government polices can also have a direct impact on online education. These elements and issues within online education was quite surprising because I had never really taken the time to sit and reflect on the different implications that it could have within an overarching context. I have just been fixated on the theory and practice of creating online learning opportunities. This was a realization moment for me to take the time to stop and examine how societal factors can contribute to the changing nature of online education.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another presentation that I found interesting, was Paula Yunker and Nicolette Young’s session on Developing Connections with Clients and Learning Communities<\/strong>. I had recently completed my 1st e-Learning project last year turning a in-class course into a 14-topic online course. The importance of establishing relationships with their clients, strategic ways of communicating and overall organizational philosophy of conducting their business is something that I can utilize in how I approach future e-Learning projects within my current professional role.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lastly, Trish Dyck\u2019s presentation on Key Success Factors for Virtual Teams<\/strong> had all the answers that would have been extremely helpful when I first embarked on the annotated team bibliography assignment at the beginning of the MLAT program! I am a task oriented individual, and she stressed the importance of incorporating a \u201crelational process\u201d for one of the key success factors when working in virtual teams (Dyck, 2019). I strongly agree that there is a huge importance in bringing a humanizing component to working collaboratively, and the \u201cDimension of Success\u201d is framework that should be actively incorporated not just in virtual groups, but also face to face ones. Success of working in virtual teams is taking the time to have the important discussions before collaborating, utilizing other social media tools (i.e. WhatsApp) to assist in fostering a level of connectedness (Stone and Logan, 2017), as well as adopting a platform\/system that is easy and functional to use (Lauxa, Luse, and Menneckec, 2016). My takeaway from this is that working in groups is a skill that you need to foster and build upon. What works with one group of individuals, may not necessarily be the same with others. It is important to begin the collaborative process learning how to appropriately manage expectations and roll out a process that will work well for everyone!<\/span><\/p>\n
