I always knew that research and academic writing was a labouring and daunting process, but learning more about the intricacies and process has been quite the journey. We are living in an age where information is readily available for people to access with a click of a button. People have the ability and the technology to be active participants and contributors to the digital community through a variety of means. This shift has resulted in a greater need to ensure the integrity of the research process in collecting data that will result in sufficient samples. Dr. George Veletsianos had the opportunity to answer a variety of questions from students in the LRNT 522 regarding the research world and he was able to provide a lot of wisdom and good advice to our cohort moving forward. What particularly stood out to me was the question about collecting data samples to ensure that the quality and quantity would be adequate for the particular research question.<\/p>\n
Through Veletsianos\u2019 answer I was able to get a better insight into strategies and best practice tips when it will be time for me to tackle my own research. He specified that depending on what the research question and requirements are and the type of method that would be deployed will greatly affect how the data will be collected. A \u201cone size fits all\u201d approach won\u2019t be adequate because every situation will be different depending on the research question that is being examined.<\/p>\n
When explaining data collection through interviews, Veletsiano recommended that 12-20 individuals would be good sample size. He explained the saturation approach when gathering and analyzing data to gauge whether to continue exploring more data or to reinforce that you are on the right track. To ensure the integrity of the interview, using scripts, conducting mock interviews, looking at question previous researchers might have asked, and reviewing interview scripts before beginning the interviews are all very useful practices to keep in mind and utilize in the future.<\/p>\n
This insight into data collecting on a larger scale has been extremely helpful for me. The process is quite overwhelming, but becoming aware of tips and best practices can reduce anxiety of conducting research and make the journey more manageable.<\/p>\n
