You can click and swirl the elements around in a kinetic dance.

My first reaction to creating my network map was a discomfort of putting myself at its centre. It seemed egocentric. After all, why presume I am at the centre of a network? Aren’t I merely one element of this network which is in turn intertwined with myriad other networks? It’s like assuming that the earth is at the centre of the universe.

My unease is backed up by Dron and Anderson’s (2014) observation in their book Teaching Crowds. They note that: “Although concerned with human interaction, the social network-centric view of the world is, perhaps ironically, heavily focused on the individual”. (p. 132)

Ego checking aside, I do understand the importance of the task: learning the nature of networks by creating an image of my own world of connections. This map certainly has shown the trellis of souls which I have the good fortune of knowing. They provide me with support and engagement.

All good, but it also reminds me that we should be careful when we frame networks. What or who is the centre? And why?

If I don’t answer these questions, I could make false assumptions and create a network model that is erroneous, like the geocentric universe of early astronomers. In any accurate network model, including that of our solar system, the sun does not revolve around the earth.

Dron, J., & Andreson, T., (2014). Teaching Crowds: Learning and Social Media. http://www.aupress.ca/index.php/books/120235

You absolutely have to click here.
