{"id":248,"date":"2020-01-19T21:47:51","date_gmt":"2020-01-20T04:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0111\/?p=248"},"modified":"2020-01-21T15:28:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T22:28:41","slug":"tappa-in-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0111\/tappa-in-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"TAPPA in Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"E46\"><span id=\"E48\">Through TAPPA (Target, Accomplishment, Past, Prototype, Artifact) Moore (2013) offers a path for instructional designers to follow which he asserts will allow them to<\/span><span id=\"E52\"> create prototypes at a faster rate than possible though other design m<\/span><span id=\"E54\">odels<\/span><span id=\"E56\">. Theses other <\/span><span id=\"E58\">design<\/span><span id=\"E60\"> models include ADDIE (Molenda, 2003) and the Dick and Carey Model (Dick, 1996), <\/span><span id=\"E64\">and <\/span><span id=\"E66\">are in<\/span><span id=\"E68\"> fact the models in which key principles of TAPPA are grounded. Where TAPPA <\/span><span id=\"E70\">diverges <\/span><span id=\"E72\">from it <\/span><span id=\"E74\">origins<\/span><span id=\"E76\">, is in the 4<\/span><span id=\"E77\">th<\/span><span id=\"E78\"> phase, the Prototype phase. It is here where Moore argues that<\/span><span id=\"E82\"> the elements common to the aforementioned models; evaluation, development, and design, can be combined into a <\/span><span id=\"E84\">single<\/span><span id=\"E-4324\"> step, the Prototype phase. He describes how condensing and combing these elements is what will allow for the &#8216;rapid prototyping&#8217; unique to TAPPA (Moore, 2016).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E-4323\"><span id=\"E86\">Moore <\/span><span id=\"E-3859\">lauds the advanta<\/span><span id=\"E-3860\">ges of rapid prototyping; that instructors <\/span><span id=\"E-3862\">will be able to create and test <\/span><span id=\"E-3864\">prototype efficacy with actual learner feedback throughout the course of instruction in a given class, and can then <\/span><span id=\"E-3865\">select<\/span><span id=\"E-3866\"> which <\/span><span id=\"E-3867\">elements<\/span><span id=\"E-3868\"> to repeat, or which elements require tweaking, before testing the solution again in a subsequent class. <\/span><span id=\"E-3869\">As an<\/span><span id=\"E-3870\"> <\/span><span id=\"E-3871\">Instructor<\/span><span id=\"E-3872\"> reading about this condensed prototype phase, I was <\/span><span id=\"E-3873\">waiting<\/span><span id=\"E-3874\"> to read about what sort of structures existed within this phase that would make this cyclical type of prototype development feasible <\/span><span id=\"E-3878\">at an instructional level. I was unable to identify any such structures, or parameters which might make this process manageable. Instead, what I did read about was how an unreasonable amount of expectation would be placed on the <\/span><span id=\"E-3879\">instructor<\/span><span id=\"E-3880\"> during this particular phase of TAPPA model to <\/span><span id=\"E-3881\">evaluate<\/span><span id=\"E-3882\"> and revise various instructional solutions. I couldn&#8217;t help but reflect on how distracting this could potentially be from the many other aspects of instruction. <\/span><span id=\"E-3883\">Furthermore<\/span><span id=\"E-3884\">, during a process like this, it seems as though specific <\/span><span id=\"E-3885\">learning<\/span><span id=\"E-3886\"> solutions might be <\/span><span id=\"E-3887\">available<\/span><span id=\"E-3888\"> to some learners in a course but <\/span><span id=\"E-3889\">then<\/span><span id=\"E-3890\"> not others in the same course (unless the solutions <\/span><span id=\"E-3891\">were<\/span><span id=\"E-3892\"> successful in the first run). <\/span><span id=\"E-3894\">Moore argues that this type of iterative design process is <\/span><span id=\"E-3895\">beneficial<\/span><span id=\"E-3896\">, and <\/span><span id=\"E-3897\">allows<\/span><span id=\"E-3898\"> for multiple designs to be created and tested simultaneously. However, <\/span><span id=\"E-3902\">exactly how this iterative process can be managed at the instructional level, and whether the costs to learners during this type of instructional experimentation are worth it, requires further delineation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E178\"><span id=\"E179\">In theory, Moore makes a <\/span><span id=\"E181\">compelling<\/span><span id=\"E183\"> case for the benefits of rapid prototyping. <\/span><span id=\"E187\">In practice however, <\/span><span id=\"E189\">instructors<\/span><span id=\"E191\"> may require more direction or clarity on how to manage these <\/span><span id=\"E193\">processes<\/span><span id=\"E195\"> in the midst of their other instructional responsibilities.
