{"id":241,"date":"2019-08-24T12:19:57","date_gmt":"2019-08-24T19:19:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/?p=241"},"modified":"2019-08-24T12:19:57","modified_gmt":"2019-08-24T19:19:57","slug":"copyright-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/copyright-in-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Copyright in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_242\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-242\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-242 size-thumbnail lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2019\/08\/Copyright-symbol-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2019\/08\/Copyright-symbol-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2019\/08\/Copyright-symbol.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 85vw, 150px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i style=\"font-size: 8pt;color: #1a1a1a\">image source: http:\/\/clipart-library.com\/clipart\/1220023.htm<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As we come to the end of our Introduction to Research course, we were asked to listen to Melanie Wrobel, Copyright Manager at Royal Roads University (RRU), speak about copyright in Canada, a\u00a0larger and more obscure topic than I had expected.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Specifically, here are my primary take-away points:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most work is protected by copyright in Canada, even if it is not registered.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(Registration of copyright does provide evidence, however.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Copyright differs by country and copyright laws are followed according to the country you are in.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are no copyright laws which automatically protect your work internationally.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each country\u2019s copyright operates under the national copyright laws of that country.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFair dealing\u201d is an exception in Canada\u2019s copyright laws that allows the use of someone else\u2019s work without permission in special circumstances, for example, research purposes or education.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMash-ups\u201d are another exception.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They allow, under certain conditions, the use of multiple copyrighted works (or multiple parts of a work) to be used to create new material, for example, taking parts of different research papers or course content (with credits to the original author(s)) and posting it on our Moodle course site<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Creative Commons licensing offers several licenses, free of charge, to the public to allow the legal sharing of creative works <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Different countries and even individual institutions, including RRU, have their own copyright laws which must be followed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As with most laws, there are many interpretations and nuances, and not knowing is not an acceptable reason for breaking them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you are not sure if you are breaking a copyright law, be sure to find out!<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Copyright laws change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Inventions such as photocopiers and cassette tapes, and now virtual private networks (VPNs) and streaming sites, have forced the need for copyright to keep pace.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Researchers have a responsibility to ensure they use materials legally.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif\"><span class=\"s1\">Wrobel, M.
