{"id":256,"date":"2019-09-14T07:22:11","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T14:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/?p=256"},"modified":"2019-09-14T07:32:52","modified_gmt":"2019-09-14T14:32:52","slug":"applying-the-reading-to-my-context-as-an-english-language-teacher-lrnt523-activity-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/applying-the-reading-to-my-context-as-an-english-language-teacher-lrnt523-activity-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Applying Weller to My Context as an English language teacher (LRNT523 Activity 3)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Meaningful Lesson from the History of Education Technology<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Weller (2018) lists learning management systems (LMSes) as 2004\u2019s most significant education technology (often referred to as edtech).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He defines an LMS as a \u201ccollection of the most popular tools\u201d which can be &#8220;implemented more quickly [than previous technologies] across an entire institution\u201d (p. 39).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For almost two decades, I have taught in various schools around the world.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>During that time, I have used several LMSes, including D2L Brightspace, Schoology, Edmodo, Blackboard, Quizlet, and Moodle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I appreciate the convenience of having all course materials and assessment tools in one location which is easily accessible by both teachers and learners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Problematic Lesson from the History of Education Technology<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite the usefulness and convenience of an LMS, I do agree with Weller\u2019s (2018) claim that LMSes are \u201cthe only route for delivering e-learning in many institutions, with a consequent loss of expertise and innovation\u201d (p. 39).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>An LMS alone is quite limited.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Though it may contain all of the course content, students need diverse contexts to engage with the material, including opportunities to network, formally and informally, with teachers and classmates.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Beyond the LMS, an experienced teacher can gauge students\u2019 cognitive load and engagement level, take advantage of teachable moments, comprehend the nuances of students\u2019 body language, and instantly adjust and personalize the learning environment to increase relevance and engagement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Therefore, despite the importance of an LMS in my work and its overall success as an edtech tool, it does have significant limitations which, if solely or overly relied upon, would severely limit students\u2019 learning opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Reference<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">Weller, M.
