{"id":309,"date":"2019-10-20T16:29:25","date_gmt":"2019-10-20T23:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/?p=309"},"modified":"2019-10-20T16:29:25","modified_gmt":"2019-10-20T23:29:25","slug":"screen-time-guidelines-unjustified-hype-or-sound-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/screen-time-guidelines-unjustified-hype-or-sound-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"Screen Time Guidelines: Unjustified Hype or Sound Advice?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-310\" style=\"width: 523px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-310 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2019\/10\/Infant-w-iPad_image-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"348\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2019\/10\/Infant-w-iPad_image-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2019\/10\/Infant-w-iPad_image.jpeg 480w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 523px) 85vw, 523px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 523px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 523\/348;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Image Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/b0V64STB7OD0OY9iyIc3r7BJHXg=\/480x0\/filters:quality(80)\/arc-anglerfish-tgam-prod-tgam.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/ADMOAWIMXVDP3PHTAJT2Q4FGUE.JPG\">Terry Vine\/Getty Images\/Blend Images<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unit 4, Activity 7<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We all seem to be spending more time staring at screens.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While there was concern of past generations spending too much time watching television, primarily for entertainment, we now stare at our smart phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and televisions for work, school, entertainment, and social connection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are software applications targeted at people of all ages, including newborns.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With screens now creeping into every aspect of our lives, it is important to question their influence, especially on the developmental years of childhood.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is this increase in screen time the cause of the increase in child obesity?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is there a connection between increased screen time and childhood behavioral or learning problems?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sound evidence is certainly required before we label the quantity of screen time as a major, minor or insignificant factor in childhood health and wellbeing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Government and professionals in this field have a responsibility to provide policies and guidelines grounded in sound evidence so that parents, guardians can be aware of the factors which do, or do not, affect childhood health, and make educated decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/head-quarters\/2017\/jan\/06\/screen-time-guidelines-need-to-be-built-on-evidence-not-hype\">Etchells et al. (2017)<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> contend that <i>context<\/i> of screen use and <i>content<\/i> are important factors in childhood health and wellbeing and \u201cmay have a much greater impact than sheer quantity alone\u201d (para. 2).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although the authors do not provide evidence, these do appear to be important factors requiring further research and consideration.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The authors also postulate that there is no evidence to indicate a connection between screen time and childhood health and wellbeing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, they go so far as to argue that the argument is \u201csimplistic\u201d (para. 2) and \u201carguably meaningless\u201d (para. 2) and posit that to assume a connection may be detrimental or even \u201cpotentially harmful\u201d (para. 3).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although this article lists over 80 professionals as the authors, there are scores of research studies which provide evidence in opposition to this perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Research studies suggesting there IS a connection between screen time and children\u2019s health and wellbeing extend across many disciplines and countries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For example, in a publication by American Academy of Pediatrics, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1542\/peds.2010-1154\">Page, Cooper, Griew and Jago (2010)<\/a>, state their findings that \u201cgreater television and computer use were related to higher psychological difficulty scores\u201d in children (para. 3).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Moreover, in a report commissioned by the Department of Sport and Recreation by the Government of Western Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natureplaywa.org.au\/library\/1\/file\/Resources\/research\/K%20Martin%202011%20Electronic%20Overload%20DSR%20(2).pdf\">Dr. Karen Martin (2011)<\/a> asserts that current research indicates that excessive screen time among children and adolescents is more likely to cause physical health disadvantages, negative health behaviours, adverse mental and social health issues, and behavioural, learning and attentional problems or disadvantages (p. 3).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Addressing the hypothesis of a connection between screen time and child obesity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springermedizin.de\/screen-time-and-adiposity-among-children-and-adolescents-a-syste\/16572112\">Tripathi and Mishra (2019)<\/a> claim that 85 percent of the studies they selected for review \u201cindicated positive association between screen time and incidences of adiposity among children and adolescents\u201d (Tripathi &amp; Mishra, 2019, para. 4).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These sources, and many others, appear to provide sound evidence from peer-reviewed publications which support the claim of screen time as a negative affect on children\u2019s health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Etchells et al. (2017), and the many other authors who continue to weigh in on this debate, have reminded me of the complexity of children\u2019s health and wellbeing, and the myriad factors which potentially influence it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The literature also reminds me to remain open to new research and evidence.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Answers to tough questions are rarely simple and we must remain curious, and take care to research meticulously, publish truthfully, ask questions, and be open to hypotheses and research that may or may not contradict with our beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In conclusion, I believe that screen time cannot be labelled as a major, minor or insignificant factor in children\u2019s health and wellbeing without sufficient and sound evidence.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With that evidence, government and professionals in the field may then provide appropriate policies and guidelines.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Parents have a responsibility, not only to learn of these policies and guidelines, but also to consider the nuances of their children and their particular needs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How much screen time do your children experience?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What is the context and content of that screen time?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How is it affecting them?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Are they getting sufficient physical activity?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How is their health and wellbeing?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What, if any, non-screen environmental factors could be adversely affecting them?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Parents cannot be experts in all fields.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It takes a community to raise a healthy child.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Creating policies and guidelines based on solid evidence is, therefore, essential to give children the best chance at optimal health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">References<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Etchells, P., Fletcher-Watson, S., Blakemore, S.
