{"id":339,"date":"2019-12-17T11:54:25","date_gmt":"2019-12-17T19:54:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/?p=339"},"modified":"2019-12-17T11:58:19","modified_gmt":"2019-12-17T19:58:19","slug":"design-in-learning-and-technology-innovation-versus-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0119\/design-in-learning-and-technology-innovation-versus-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Design in Learning and Technology: Innovation Versus Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Change can simply be replacing one thing or idea for another, such as switching to a different learning management system.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Innovation, although it involves change, is much more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It involves a transformation that advances an idea or changes the way people think by providing a novel and useful idea or product.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It often provides a solution, creating something new or radically improving something that pre-exists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Linking innovation with design and technology depends on one\u2019s definition of technology.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dron (2014) uses Arthur\u2019s (2009, as cited in Dron, 2014) definition that technologies are the \u201corchestration of phenomena to some purpose\u201d (p. 240).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Using this definition, an educational design may be innovative when it introduces a radically new or improved software program, hardware, pedagogy, tool, or other \u201cphenomena\u201d for the betterment of education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dron (2014) argues that soft technologies are more adaptable and, therefore, incorporate new innovations easier than hard technologies.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Currently, a combination of hard and soft is often used to balance teacher and learner needs with cost and time limitations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dron argues that we need systems with \u201ccapabilities for assembly and integration at a depth of sophistication that we have never seen before\u201d (p. 260) to prepare for future innovations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, since change is inevitable, would new innovations be adopted regardless of the technologies in use?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would harder technologies prevent their adoption or simply make the adoption slower or more difficult?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps we can, and must, develop models and conceptual tools to prepare for future innovations, but the answer for <i>how<\/i> to do that is not an easy one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Dron, J.
