I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca\/program-programme\/equity-equite\/bias\/module-eng.aspx?pedisable=false\">completed the Canada Research Chair Training Module on Unconscious Bias<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Key learning for me was learning about unconscious bias; how it can impact the peer review process and what methods can be integrated for mitigating the influence of unconscious bias.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">(The Canada research Chairs, n.d.) defined unconscious bias as\u00a0&#8220;an implicit attitude, stereotype, motivation or assumption that can occur without one&#8217;s knowledge or intention. Unconscious bias is a result of our life experiences.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">The module also provided different\u00a0types of bias that may affect peer review such as gender bias, institutional bias, age bias, indigenous bias, language bias. It suggested that self-awareness is the first step to prevent bias, the training suggested taking the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/implicit.harvard.edu\/implicit\/canada\/takeatest.html\">implicit association test<\/a>\u00a0in order to recognize self-bias.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">Finally, the module suggested steps in order to prevent bias. (1) stereotype replacement<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u00a0(2) Positive counter stereotype imaging (3) Perspective-taking\u00a0(4)\u00a0Individuation<\/span><\/p>\n<p>References<\/p>\n<p>Zornes, D.
