{"id":238,"date":"2020-10-20T23:54:23","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T06:54:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0154\/?p=238"},"modified":"2020-10-20T23:59:49","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T06:59:49","slug":"make-personalized-learning-great-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0154\/make-personalized-learning-great-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Make Personalized Learning Great Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #363948\"> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">I suspect the last time <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #363948\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\">Personalized Learning was great when Plato was learning what he wanted (philosophy) from who he wanted (Socrates).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #222222\"> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Personalized learning<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> is often <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">equat<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">ed to<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> learning with a computer or technology-based instruction<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">and while <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">t<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">echnology has a<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">n important<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">role to play, it should not replace or overshadow a structural reform of the educational system. T<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">his is how<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">I envision <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">an ideal <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #363948\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">future for my son, who will be in high school in 2030. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #363948\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">His <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">strengths, needs, skills and interest<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">s are regularly assessed through a <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">series of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">interview<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">s<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> by <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">one or several<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> educational psychologists who create a personality profile. This profile will be updated by each of his subsequent teachers. It is used to help him choose a direction in his education as well as individual courses <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">that fit that direction<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">There are no mandatory courses.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> For each individual course, <strong>he gets to choose his own teacher<\/strong> (since technology allows it, maybe even out of thousands of teachers across Canada) or even multiple teachers<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. Perhaps that is how <strong>he also gets to choose what he learns in that course<\/strong>. Let\u2019s say if it\u2019s Psychology, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">he gets to pick individual theories he is interested in. No more memorizing useless information for tests. I doubt that Socrates was giving multiple-choice tests to Plato and grading him. Abolishing tests altogether might not be a bad idea. For admission to higher education, a comprehensive personality profile built over 10 years of school can be used along with a series of interviews and oral presentations of accumulated knowledge.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Is this likely to happen in Canada? Not in 10 years. The inertia of the existing system is too strong to overcome. <span style=\"color: #363948\">It can only happen in a built from the scratch alternative system.
