Isn\u2019t your lovely Sofia about to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">start<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> school, just like my <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">daughter<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">? <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The l<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">ast time we spoke, you were asking me about the education system in Canada. Well, a lot has changed since 1997 when I moved here. Can you believe it\u2019s been 33 years? Remember, how I used to copy your homework <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">in a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">hemistry class because I hated it too much to study, but still wanted to get a good grade to show my dad because he was a chemical engineer? <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Well, in Canada c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">hemistry is no longer a mandatory class in high school! <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The most interesting development is that <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the grading system has been eliminated from <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">about half of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">high schools. It started with a pilot project in 2013 <\/span><\/span>(Nixon, 2017) <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">and the concept was gradually accepted by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">many <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">others. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">At the moment, a parent can choose between two different approaches. You<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> are probably wondering <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">how this divide came to be<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. Well, there are several reasons <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">for<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> it. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">One of the main <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">anti-grading <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">arguments<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">is <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">that<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> grades do not motivate students <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">to learn<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">because <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">learning is about intrinsic motivation while <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">grades act as<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">extrinsic motivation <\/span><\/span>(Blum, 2016, p.96). The domination of extrinsic motivation is claimed by Blum to have a negative effect because <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\">\u201cextrinsically motivated workers act in accordance with a \u201cminimax\u201d strategy: They attempt to perform the bare minimum of work sufficient for the achievement of maximal rewards.\u201d<\/span>(Kruglanski et al., 1977, p.141). At the same time, <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">grades<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">do not <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">provide a proper<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">understanding of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">student\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">s knowledge and abilities because<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> they assume <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> uniformity of input, process and output, although every student has a different life and academic experience <\/span><\/span><\/span>(Blum, 2017). <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Moreover,<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> 56 % of students<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> reported being<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> stressed about grades <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">(American College Health Association, 2013)<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">While my personal experience confirms that the grading system is flawed as described, I wanted to explore the other side of the argument and find out why the grading system persists and is still acceptable among students and parents. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Diseth et al., (2020) <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">claim<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> that \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">that there is no necessary contradiction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">(p. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">972<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">)<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">and argue that the relationship between them and learning is more complex than once thought. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Furthermore, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">C<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">ovington and Mueller <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">(2001)<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">claim<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> that every <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">student<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">differs in what motivates them <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">depending on their personality traits, some are driven by intrinsic motivation while others are more motivated by extrinsic motivation<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Perhaps,<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> there is a place for each approach within a system. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">If one approach doesn\u2019t work for my son, it\u2019s good to know that I can transfer him to a school relying on a different approach. It\u2019s also interesting how the increase in <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">use of Artificial Intelligence(AI) is affecting both systems. After <\/span><\/span><\/span>Chui et al.(2020)<span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> were able to demonstrate that they could predict <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">with a 90+% accuracy <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">at-risk student via a machine learning algorithm, the traditional grading educational system <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">(TGES)<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> has started using AI to identify at-risk <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">students so that they could be better supported. The eliminated grading educational system (EGES) could not take advantage of these learning algorithms because <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">they<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> heavily relied on grades. As a result, TGES has a lower drop-out rate and is considered a safer choice <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">by parents who are worried about their kids\u2019 performance. It has a reputation <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">for<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> producing well-rounded <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">graduates<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">A<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">t the same time, EGES started using AI to identify gifted students. It all <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">began<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> after <\/span><\/span><\/span>Hodges &amp; Mohan (2019)<span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> claimed that <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201cWhere machine learning can be best utilized by researchers and educators is in classification tasks using nonlinear indicators. An example of a nonlinear indicator is a student academic product like a poem\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">(p.243)<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">After eliminating grading, EGES naturally relied on paying more attention to non-linear indicators. Compared to TGES, EGES has a higher drop-out rate, but it is considered a better choice by parents who believe their kids <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">have higher potential<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">It has<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> a reputation <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">for<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> producing <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">more exceptional<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">graduates<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Academic learning is not everyone <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">as <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">you know, Ally<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. My oldest son was never into reading, as much as I tried to encourage him. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">I hope all those evenings of me reading to him at least gave him something, if not the love for learning and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">reading<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">. Lucky him that all schools nowadays, regardless of the system, have AI assessments of non-academic talents. It was already possible a decade ago when <\/span><\/span><\/span>Muazu Musa et al. (2019) <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">demonstrated that a machine learning approach can predict <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">an athletic <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">high potential by analyzing physical fitness indicators. Who would\u2019ve thought that my son has <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> potential to be among <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">top 5% in water polo? <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">He really enjoys playing for his school team, they are very competitive in a junior national league! <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">D<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">o you remember how back in the day teachers used to ignore someone who was having a rough day or simply told them to suck it up? Oh, how times have changed. Nowadays, AI is used in schools to identify and predict mental health problems. What\u2019s great is that not only it pays attention to multiple variables, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">as <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Tate et al.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">(<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">2020<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">)<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">demonstrated that<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #202020\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the model did not overly rely on any variable, thus the model would be relatively stable with the removal of any one variable, including those stable over time<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">This<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> means that if my son\u2019s classmate calls him an asshole and hurts his feelings, but they make peace the next day, it won\u2019t be reported to a school counsel<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">l<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">or as a potential mental health problem. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">It might even help with eliminating bullying, although much of it happens online rather than in-person. The last time I spoke with a school principal, I was told that AI is being used to detect cyberbullying as well. Much progress has been made since <\/span><\/span><\/span>Wu et al. (2020)<span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> created algorithms for bullying detection. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"> <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">All these benefits come from increasingly invasive data collection, which concerns me as a parent, but I hope we can discuss it in our next conversation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">R<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">eferences<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">American College Health Association.
