Reflections on George Veletsianos’ Q&A<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In reviewing the Q&A session with George Veletsianos<\/a>, a number of things stood out to me, namely how to keep and use a journal regarding the research, as well as how to tie existing research to your area of interest.<\/p>\n

With regard to the first item, I’ve already been using Zotero<\/a> to catalogue the articles I’ve been reading, and Acrobat Reader<\/a> to take notes. From his description, it seems the use of a journal (whether physical or digital) is one item I am currently lacking. This journal would then keep my notes regarding an article in a single location so that I can essentially flip through them and see if there are any correlations, things that come up frequently, etc. It makes it more accessible and, based on the description, it appears that a physical journal may be the best way forward for me in this regard.<\/p>\n

Regarding tying existing research to your own area of interest, or research question, the analogy of an onion was used where the main research question is at the center of the onion. Essentially you look at one aspect, and then another, as you work your way to the middle. This is similar to the method I was taught to program building automation using the question, “How do you eat an elephant?” Essentially the idea is to break down the problem into smaller, bite-sized pieces. In this way you are able to (1) not be overwhelmed and (2) ensure you’re spending a good amount of time connecting the dots. Any large problem should be possible to break down in this way, whether viewing it as onions or elephants.<\/p>\n

Really, really helpful session that makes me feel less nervous about going the thesis route if I want to. Now to go out (online) and get a journal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
