T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he design thinking challenge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">allowed us<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to take an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">empathic approach to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gain critical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0insights\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our learners&#8217; need<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A significant body of research ha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0documented many benefits for learners who participate in group work. For example, learners working in groups can achieve\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">academic learning outcomes and gain deeper comprehensive educational exper<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iences\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">than<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0learners working individually\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Smith, 1996<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Roseth et al., 2008<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wilson et al., 2018)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As such, group work is part of many\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cours<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e curriculum\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and programs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tep 1\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(d.School, 2016)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the design process,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we have ident<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ified<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a significant gap in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">offering learners a safe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0collaborative space\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">practicing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0social competency, enhancing interpersonal and critical thinking skills<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These skills are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">essential<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for learners to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have a positive\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learning\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experience in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">any collaborative environment in education and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the employment sector upon graduation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Moreover, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hese skills are no longer\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">perceived as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an asset<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rather\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a requirement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for success<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Riebe et al., 2016)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As we d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ove<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0deeper into Step<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a02 &amp; 3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(d.School, 2016)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we synthesi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">zed that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">teamwork capacities\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0repeated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">highlighted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">group projects can often\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">go amiss\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when they are not designed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to foster learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, supervised,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0assessed in a way that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">promotes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0meaning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ful<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">group\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work and deep collaboration<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">design\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">process, strong commonalities were discovered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which led\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">us\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">development of three problem statements in Step 4\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d.School<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 2016)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Problem Statement\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">#1:<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Learners are at different\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">life stages<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and intercultural<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0contexts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0they do not have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">equal level of mo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tiv<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ation, communication, and collaborative skills.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Problem Statement\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">#2:<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Learners\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">need<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a safe space\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learn how to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work in a group<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, foster<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and nurture their communication and collaborative skills.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Problem Statement<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0#3<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Free-riding.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Equal grade<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to group members are not reflective\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0equal\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learning or contribution.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">survey conducted by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wilson et al. ( 2018)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 93% of learners believe that teamwork skills are essential for their future careers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">owever,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0only 60% believe that they are well equipped.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Furthermore,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Riebe et al. (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2016)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0built upon the narrative\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dissonance\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">education<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">here is now a more explicit\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">expectation among employer groups and governments that high<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">er education\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(HE) institutions will provide students quality\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">training in teamwork skills and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">capabilities to ensure graduates are better<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0prepared to work in teams when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">commencing employment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(p.620)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prototype\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Solution<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&amp; The Theory Behind the Model<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through Step<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a05<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 6, and 7<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(d.School, 2016)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">determined that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">HE institu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tions need a systematic approach to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">include teamwork pedagogy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as part of the curriculum.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prototype<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0model<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Open\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Collaborative Learning (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">L)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">grounded in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Principles of I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nstructions identified by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Merrill (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2002)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and employs support protocols for both learners and educators<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(see Figure 1)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OCL<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">design model\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prerequisite course\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0all\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learners at the program level<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uphold<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a universal standard<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following Merrill&#8217;s first principle of instructions,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OCL<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">provides learners with the opportunity to engage in a real-world problem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
