In this post, I will be discussing how I could use scenario based simulations in my field for teaching IT within the 2-year diploma program that I teach.

Database backups and recovery is a concept that many students struggle with in one of the classes that I teach. I show students many ways to defend their database systems they create, and tell them about just as many, if not more ways that those systems could be destroyed. Unfortunately, there is not one simple way to protect against all attacks and threats to these systems. Students need to know which defences protect against which attacks.

I would like to investigate the possibility of using scenario based simulations to mimic various attacks and threats to a database system and let students choose which defence is the most appropriate. Students could run the simulation multiple times until they get the right answer and perhaps even see what happens when the wrong or less suitable answers are chosen. This game could be run on the students own time. This immediate and low-risk feedback would help reinforce the lessons and hands on practice provided in class.

Would incorporating scenario based simulations in my IT classes improve the knowledge retention of database defences and help students better apply their skills in a more real-life situation? Would the time and effort required to create these digital resources be worth it? I have just begun to investigate the literature, but there are a few articles regarding the use of choose your own adventure stories for teaching in cyber security (Chothia et al., 2017), virtual simulations for cyber security training (Ernits & Kikkas, 2016) and the importance of creating a good database protection plan (Guimaraes, 2006). I look forward to investigating application of scenario based simulations for cyber security training.

References

Chothia, T., Holdcroft, S., Radu, A.-I., & Thomas, R.
