Activism&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1mQS_o-C_jO2taghriJfXKDsgfa1fUL0mTDMo2JTGSJc\/edit?platform=hootsuite\">2021 RRU MALAT Symposium<\/a> offered a platform to explore a range of possibilities and unique challenges at the intersection of education and technology. \u00a0I expected to leave with new insights and ares of inquiry, but was delighted to end the week feeling energized and inspired. \u00a0There were countless themes woven through the sessions and yet three ideas resonated most:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif\"><strong>Openness &#8211; Identity &#8211; Activism<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Cormier&#8217;s workshop <a href=\"https:\/\/malat-coursesite.royalroads.ca\/lrnt521\/dave-cormier-virtual-symposium-presentation\/\"><em>I<\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ntentional messiness of online communities<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/a>added depth to the meaning of &#8216;open&#8217;, which I&#8217;ve learned requires a contextual explanation when used as it can refer to many aspects of education: open access for communities, open source material and open content independent of pedagogy to name a few. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Cormier shared how &#8220;Open gets messy&#8221; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 366\/215;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif\">(Cormier, 2017, 27:00)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">An insight that resonated was #2 on the list above: &#8220;Every <em>We<\/em> Makes a <em>Them<\/em>&#8220;. \u00a0Cormier shared that &#8220;the longer a learning community has been formed, the harder they are to break into&#8230;that sense of inclusion becomes difficult the more open your learning community ends up being&#8221; (Cormier, 2017, 29:15)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">The notion of openness as it relates to access was also central to Amanda Cooledge&#8217;s presentation <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.bbcollab.com\/collab\/ui\/session\/playback\/load\/7f4d3688c6764b40bd1264f8750e19ce\">Open Education: what it is; what it does and its amazing impact!<\/a> (Cooledge, 2021).\u00a0 As the Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/open.bccampus.ca\">Open Education BCCampus<\/a>, Cooledge not only shared valuable resources like <a href=\"https:\/\/open.bccampus.ca\/browse-our-collection\/find-open-textbooks\/\">the collection of publicly available open textbooks,<\/a> they also\u00a0noted in the Q&amp;A period the main projects their team is focused on including &#8220;supporting access for rural and indigenous communities and finding the the best way to teach instructors how to ensure their content is anti-r<span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">acist.&#8221; (Cooledge, 2021, 41:22)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif\">At the recommendation fellow MALAT graduate student of <a href=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0204\/the-process-a-reflection\/\">Angela Frawley<\/a> &#8211; I watched <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0124\/\">Earl Einarson<\/a>&#8216;s session &#8220;<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How can we incorporate Indigenous Worldviews in the creation of online culturally safe learning environments?&#8221; \u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0Earl shared from his 15-20 years of experience in working with\u00a0indigenous communities that he &#8220;brings my whole self to everything\u00a0I do&#8230; I&#8217;m pretty open, you have to be because truth and\u00a0openness go together&#8221; \u00a0 (Einarson, 2021, 21:16). \u00a0This statement left me to ponder my own identify, online and otherwise, and how I show up to spaces and my positionally to the content I share. \u00a0In fact &#8211; I felt encouraged to share more about <a href=\"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0207\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=168&amp;action=edit\">Who I Am<\/a> as my first blog post to be clear about my perspective as a student in this program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">The symposium culminated with a Saturday Debrief Social, where a number of MALAT students convened to share ideas, nerves and our excitement about the past week. \u00a0We lamented the enormous challenges involved with the future of education which gave more weight to how Cormier introduced himself in his presentation as an &#8220;educational activist&#8221; (Cormier, 2017). \u00a0As I progress through the next two years of the MALAT program, I am doing so with consideration for my role and work after school, how will I leverage my position to be more than simply a proponent of education, but an activist to improve education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif\">References<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Cormier, D.
