Amanda Coolidge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I had the pleasure of hearing Amanda Coolidge, Director of Open Education BCCampus, speak at the 2021 MALAT Virtual Symposium on Open Education: what it is; what it does and its amazing impact!\u00a0 The idea of open education and open textbooks was a foreign concept to me at the time.\u00a0 I recall thinking about how much I had paid for my university textbooks.\u00a0 How some were hardly used and how they were now gathering dust on my bookshelf.\u00a0 While listening to Amanda speak, I also thought about how amazing it would have been to customise some of these textbooks based on personal experiences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have chosen Amanda Coolidge based on her significant contributions and advocacy work in the field of Open education and Open textbooks in British Columbia.\u00a0 Highlights of her and her team\u2019s work include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2012: BC Open Textbook Project.\u00a0 Since its launch the project has<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Saved students more than $14 million in textbook costs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Impacted 130,000+ students<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Experienced growth of the Open textbook collection.\u00a0 The collection includes books and guides for post secondary education<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2012:\u00a0 BC Open Education Librarians<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creation of the first open education librarians community in BC to learn about open education practices through sharing knowledge and providing support for others<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2014: Faculty Fellow Program\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instructors brought together to determine efficacy of open textbook use and to provide mentorship to those new to open textbooks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2016: Start of project to bring OpenStax books into Pressbooks<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These books which could be edited, adapted and customized to meet students\u2019 needs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By the Fall of 2019, there were 33 OpenStax books available in Pressbooks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Current:\u00a0 Indigenization Project<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Co-create open education resources to support incorporation of Indigenous epistemologies into professional practice<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is clear how passionate Amanda is about creating an equitable environment which embraces inclusion, diversity and accessibility.\u00a0 She emphasizes the importance of collaboration and stepping out of our silos in order for change to occur.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur greatest resource is the relationships we build in our community through collaboration\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0&#8211;Amanda Coolidge<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have included the following links for more information about Amanda Coolidge and her work:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/acoolidge.opened.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amanda Notes<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/25years.opened.ca\/2021\/03\/28\/between-the-chapters-open-textbooks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Between the Chapters 25 Years of Ed Tech:\u00a0 Open Textbooks<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bccampus.ca\/2019\/10\/28\/from-lost-to-belonging-by-amanda-coolidge-opened-2019-keynote\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From Lost to Belonging by Amanda Coolidge &#8211;
