After looking at my map, I tried to make sense of it and what it meant to me. The three spaces I spend a lot of time in that are represented on my map are Teams, Instagram and Google Docs. Teams is a messaging app, and a workspace for real-time coaction and communication via video, teams and chat functions for meetings and lessons. Instagram is a photo-sharing app which lets users apply filters to photos and share them with friends, family and followers. Users can also link their accounts to other social media networks. Lastly, Google Docs, is a potent, living collaborative tool that can be used to edit text. More than one person can edit the text while seeing others’ edits simultaneously.

My perception and understanding of what social media is has altered through engaging with the resources from unit two. I had never thought of Google Docs as social media or considered that once you add a user to a Google Doc, it becomes a community. Then I reflected on one of the first readings by Danah Boyd who used the term “networked publics” and spoke of these publics being restructured by networked technologies (Boyd. 2010). Boyd also talked about the evolution of publics and spoke of print media, broadcast media and social media. My takeaway from this was that I need to think a little bigger and be vigilant to evaluate what these technologies do, how I use them and consider them in a different light and not let their ubiquitous nature exempt them from my scrutiny.

Looking at my map, I am struck by three things: First, that a lot of my time is spent in both the resident area for work as well in the visitor area. Second, I like to keep my personal and organization spheres separate and thirdly, the absence of Facebook. When reading about Boyd’s work, I reflected on the “blurring of public and private. Without control over context, public and private become meaningless binaries [that] are scaled in new ways, and are difficult to maintain as distinct”(Boyd 2010). When Facebook started to move north and south on the personal and organizational continuum of my life, I decided to remove this public space from my life. Although sometimes I regret not having this space to reach out to students, I have been able to find new platforms to advance my goals as an educator but not give up my privacy.

Finally, I am curious and intrigued to explore more about Wikipedia as a public network. Although I do not rely heavily on this site, and had never thought of it as a community, I am interested in the idea of its illegitimacy in an institutional context and how Dave White termed it a “ Learning Black Market”(White. 2013).
