The personal technology mapping exercise provided a few insights into my use of technology that I had never before considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If asked prior to this exercise about my technological footprint, I likely would have said it was medium-light for my personal use and very light for my professional use. However, using the descriptions of the terms \u201cresidents\u201d and \u201cvisitors\u201d by White and LeCornu (2011) and applying the mapping method presented on YouTube by David White (2013), it becomes clear that my digital footprint is actually quite heavy, and leaves a notable trail in more spaces than I would have thought. Likewise, the digital footprint left behind from my professional life is more than I would have considered previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also became evident that my digital presence is ever increasing as a result of my participation in the MALAT program. For example, my YouTube use prior to this course would have almost fallen completely into the visitor section and mostly been personal, but due to having to post a public introduction video, my presence on the site is now more traceable. Additionally, one piece of technology that lies closest to being a resident is my MALAT blog, which is so open. The only other sites I use that leave as much or more of a trace were sites where I do not use my real name, so it could be argued that I am even less of a resident in those spaces. However, I did identify myself closer to a resident on them on the basis that if my identity were to be unveiled, the trace that I leave there would be greater than my blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
