As a mom of an 11-year-old son, virtual worlds and gamification are a large part of everyday life; how that love of gaming can be translated into an educational opportunity has always been a question of mine. Jaime Donally, a former math teacher, current edtech consultant, and virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tech expert is addressing this specific question. Her paper New Realties (2019) details the benefits of VR and AR for the learner, such as the ability to explore the most minute atoms up close and allowing travel across the globe to historical settings otherwise out of reach. The paper also provides information on applications and programs that are attainable to the educator and that can be incorporated in today’s learning environment as they are financially feasible and intuitive to the user. Donally also created the #ARVRinEDU community (Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality Immersive Technology in Education) which includes blogs, events, and videos with a focus on applying AR and VR within technology geared to children. Donally writes for both experts and parents, and her knowledge of the classroom along with the technical innovation with AR and VR highlights where I believe we will see gamification in education blossom.

References

Donally, J.
