This involves designing, setting up, and communicating with students through various touchpoints and triggers. The concept of serving as a tour guide, cheerleader, coach, and Big Brother, as outlined in the article by Bull, B. (2013), resonates deeply with me. The role resembles that of a parent, offering a secure environment for development while simultaneously correcting students when they require additional challenges, coaching, or collaborative learning.

I really resonated with the valve control area (Bull, 2013), as many of the courses I teach have so much content it can get overwhelming. While students want everything to be there so they can know what is coming, I tend to only show the first four weeks of some of my courses in an attempt to chunk it out for them. Students have access to all assignments and their due dates, and during my lectures, I discuss the forthcoming assignments and provide details weeks before we commence. After reading this article, I feel that I should slow down in many areas and communicate more through various channels, providing triggers and prompts in real time to further engage and enhance the student’s learning and experience.

Questions I have:

Some of my questions regarding digital facilitation pertain to best practices related to the content I teach, specifically human relations, leadership, and change management. After reading the article by Dunlap & Lowenthal (2018), I am also curious about how the four themes identified through crowdsourcing align with the COI model. One other question that came up for me was whether there were any considerations or best practices for intercultural communication when working with international students for digital facilitation.

I like the thought that a digital facilitator is like a tour guide.

Sharing knowledge, showing the way, giving nuggets of great information to help them grow and learn, learning with them as you travel through the journey together. There are so many ways the Tour Guide supports the class and our learners.

After reading the resources for Week 1, my initial thoughts about digital facilitation are as follows: It requires work and intentional thought to be present and create an inclusive environment for learning to occur.
