I’ve found myself reflecting on my ID experiences at work and found that my perspective of ID has shifted as my exposure increased. In my past role, I consistently focused on the iterative development of eLearning modules and rarely had an opportunity to see the end to end implementation of the design model. It was very task oriented and focused on completing design change requests from different stakeholders. In contrast, my current role allows for oversight on the project management for learning solutions and I am fascinated by the progression of each phase of the projects.

Currently, my team uses different ID models for different purposes. ADDIE is an overarching default framework that is adopted for many corporate training initiatives that are in line with the strategic goals for the company. For example, we most recently used the ADDIE framework to launch an onboarding program for staff transitioning to international assignments. As there was a clear corporate goal, we began by analyzing the needs of global mobility staff, designed a training and facilitation plan with milestones, developed the content considering cultural nuances, implemented the program in stages, and as of now we continually evaluate and refine the program after feedback from each onboarding class.

On the other hand, we use a different approach for more complex technical solutions. My department is responsible for a database within the company so whenever there is a bug, enhancement request, or new feature for this database software, our L&D team uses a SAM model with Agile principles to better align with evolving business needs and user requirements. My team and I work closely with our IT counterparts to make iterative improvements while ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations.

For example, we are currently working on a ticket requesting a new filter enhancement in the database. We first conducted a thorough needs analysis, speaking with the requestor and conducting an assessment of user pain points. We gathered feedback from end-users and stakeholders on this proposal and then created mock-ups of the site page that would have the new filtering option. Applying agile principles, we sent the ticket to IT with all the user feedback and instructions to implement the new filter. Following the sprint process, once IT has developed their code, they will return the ticket to my team to conduct regression testing. In the case testing is clear, my team will prepare release notes to communicate the change within the company. However, in the case testing prompts additional improvements to the filter or site, my team will send it back to IT after noting our feedback and requests for iteration. This process will loop continuously between our teams until the final implementation and rollout

Before this course, although I knew about ID models and their use case in my work application, I did not have a deep understanding of the reasoning behind each practice. I was always very intrigued by this SAM + Agile process as it followed a very specific yet flexible structure in practice. But after conducting research and readings in this course, I understand the benefit of using SAM + Agile in this context as it allows for a quicker response time to changing requirements within our database. It also includes the element of continuous use involvement and increased collaboration. With every week being unpredictable, we can get anywhere from 3-12 database ticket requests a week, and incorporating Agile results in incremental improvements while preventing major disruptions to the database during the development process.

Going forward, I am interested in learning more about the underlying principles and structure of Agile, and how it interacts with ID models for more progressive solutions.

Photo by Kier in Sight Archives on Unsplash

(Squares representing Kanban in an Agile framework)

I’ve been really intrigued by the plethora of design models there are in the world of instructional design (ID) since starting LRNT 524.
