{"id":263,"date":"2024-02-07T10:56:39","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T03:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0284\/?p=263"},"modified":"2024-02-07T10:56:40","modified_gmt":"2024-02-07T03:56:40","slug":"unit-1-reflections-on-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malat-webspace.royalroads.ca\/rru0284\/unit-1-reflections-on-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Unit 1 reflections on leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My key takeaways from unit 1:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leadership is a social construct<\/strong>.&nbsp; It\u2019s the ability to unify people towards a common goal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many theories about how to best do that (Workman &amp; Cleveland-Innes, 2012), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/unity.edu\/leadership-in-abundance\/leadership-to-go-rather-than-not-to-go-is-the-literal-definition\/\">methods and metrics have changed over time<\/a> (Unity Environmental University, 2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s a generalization, <strong>women tend to lead differently from men<\/strong> (Fitzgerald, 2003) with a greater focus on people as opposed to outcomes; however Fitzgerald, along with Huggins (2017) about HS principals\u2019 (in)ability to distribute leadership, also fails to address the next point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leadership is action, not a job title<\/strong>.\u00a0 Just because someone has leadership in title does not make them a leader, they are often glorified managers or simply the person in charge.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1aYaj2-GZqk\">Senge<\/a> (2015) also did a good job of differentiating the two.\u00a0 I also found his definition of leadership as \u201cthe capacity of a human community to shape its future\u201d a nice hybrid between the classical dichotomies illustrated by Fitzgerald.\u00a0 But in the same video Senge also screwed up the origin of the word leadership claiming it was \u201cleith\u201d. That doesn\u2019t abrogate his views, but it did lead me down another rabbit hole, ultimately leading me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/what-can-we-learn-leadership-from-napoleon-anthony-graziano\/\">this article<\/a> on Napoleon.\u00a0 Graziano (2023) highlights: <strong>vision, communication, decisiveness, adaptability, trust, empowerment, and recognition of the team<\/strong> as the qualities which made Napoleon a renowned historical leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How all of this ties into digital learning environments still isn\u2019t clear but it\u2019s a solid foundation on leadership to begin that exploration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">References<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>College, U.
