The article clearly shows how generative AI tools like ChatGPT are changing the way people engage with online knowledge spaces, especially platforms like Stack Overflow. While this shift feels inevitable, it is hard not to feel a sense of loss for the human connections that have long been built through these communities.

The authors explain that following the release of ChatGPT, there were “significant declines in both website visits and question volumes at Stack Overflow, particularly around topics where ChatGPT excels” (Burtch et al., 2024). What stood out to me here is that this decline is not just about fewer questions being asked, but about fewer people participating in shared learning. It makes sense that people would turn to AI for quick answers, especially when solutions can be generated within seconds, but that speed also removes the need to engage, explain, or struggle through a problem with others.

Personally, I see AI much more as a support than a replacement. In my own life, it can help with work, school, and organization, but it does not replace the value of human presence. Human interaction is vital to my well‑being. It motivates me, exposes me to perspectives I hadn’t considered, and helps me work through things I cannot fully solve on my own. This is something the article indirectly highlights through its comparison between Stack Overflow and Reddit. Reddit communities, which are more socially driven, did not see the same decline in participation, suggesting that strong social connections act as a kind of protection against full displacement by AI (Burtch et al., 2024).

One of the most concerning points in the article is that newer users are the ones most likely to disengage. When beginners turn directly to AI instead of participating in communities, they lose much more than just answers. They lose opportunities to build problem‑solving skills, communication skills, collaboration habits, and research abilities. They also miss out on forming relationships within a community that they can later rely on. These are skills that develop through interaction, not isolation.

The authors warn that if participation continues to decline, there will be fewer opportunities for “collaboration, mentorship, [and] job search,” all of which depend on interpersonal interaction (Burtch et al., 2024). This idea connects strongly to my belief that mentorship is foundational to human society. Knowledge passed down through lived experience cannot be replicated by AI. The emotion behind a story, the tone of someone’s voice, or the meaning behind a shared moment simply does not translate through a screen in the same way. These human details are part of how learning becomes meaningful.

While I do not believe any single source of knowledge—human, book, or AI—is 100% reliable on its own, I do believe humans require social connection to truly thrive. With people, answers often come with personal context and perspective, which adds depth that AI and manuals lack. Accuracy is important, but meaning matters too.

Despite these concerns, I do not feel pessimistic about the future. I still see AI as a tool rather than a replacement. Technology will continue to evolve, but that does not mean human connection becomes less important. If anything, it becomes more valuable. I believe AI could even be designed in ways that guide people back into communities instead of away from them. I know I would not be the person I am today without the connections I have built over time, and that is something no algorithm can replace.

Footnote: ChatGPT was used to refine the language in the final draft. All concepts and ideas are mine.

References:

Burtch, G., Lee, D., & Chen, Z.
