I have spent a few hours on this research and not because I wished to overdo it, but it was fascinating and interesting…
I found several names for distance education. First and second-generation distance education was mostly referred to as:
- Correspondence Courses, Extended Studies, Extension Courses,
- Continuing Education, External Studies, Home Study,
- Distance Learning, Independent studies, Self-paced studies.
Describing third, fourth and fifth generation distance education included the following terms:
- Cyber Education, Online Education, Virtual Education
- Distributed Learning, Hybrid Education, Technology-supported Education,
- E-learning, Web-based Education.
