I have spent a few hours on this research and not because I wished to overdo it, but it was fascinating and interesting…

I found several names for distance education. First and second-generation distance education was mostly referred to as:

  • Correspondence Courses, Extended Studies, Extension Courses,
  • Continuing Education, External Studies, Home Study,
  • Distance Learning, Independent studies, Self-paced studies.

Describing third, fourth and fifth generation distance education included the following terms:

  • Cyber Education, Online Education, Virtual Education
  • Distributed Learning, Hybrid Education, Technology-supported Education,
  • E-learning, Web-based Education.
