My research topic is on how staff and clinicians can continuously learn and develop their digital skills and practices in caring safely for their patients. While it is true that continuous learning is inherent in clinicians and staff that works in healthcare settings, the challenge I have observed in my organization is that most staff and clinicians find it challenging to integrate digital upskilling in their daily practices. For example, our surveys and focus groups showed that most clinicians and administrative staff know the basics of how to use the clinical systems but when faced with complex tasks in clinical documentation, the initial gut is to ask the person beside them that may inadvertently teach them bad practices. There have also been instances where an issue with workflow practice is instantly deemed as a lack of training when the latter is more of the issue. Hence, I believe there is an opportunity to explore ways to support our staff in their digital practices so they could become more proactive in assessing issues, e.g., is it workflow or technical/digital practice issues? My research will be grounded in the Community of Inquiry framework and guided by adult learning, social-constructivism, and self -determination theories.
With this action research in mind, my audience is stakeholders from healthcare organizations. I envision that the groups that will be interested in my research are clinical/unit leaders, clinical educators, staff, and decision-makers. I think the most appropriate avenue to share my research is through conferences and workshops both within my organization and other healthcare organizations.
Hi Sharon,
Your research topic is very interesting and will certainly be a great value to the stakeholders that you have identified. Your choice “to explore ways to support staff in their digital skills so that they can become more proactive in assessing issues, e.g., it is workflow or technical/digital practice issues” will indeed empower staff in new ways, benefiting all levels (including providers and recipients) of the healthcare organization. Your choice to ground your research in the Community of Inquiry framework is excellent. Similarly, I feel that you have identified the most effective ways to share your research–through conferences and workshops. Very exciting for you AND your organization, Sharon! Looking forward to hearing and seeing how your research unfolds.
Best regards,
Leigh
