Tools and Powers in Design Practice

Fundamental to my designing and teaching practice is me and my survival and coping skills. I am the only reliable source, and each day, I work to improve what I think is necessary to foster learning in the classroom—my personal characteristics. Relying on specific design tools is risky in public education. For example, I do not have a working projector in my room, nor a TV. To have iPads for students, I must sign them out in advance. The iPads are old. My “teacher computer” is slow. WIFI is not reliable in our building.

I do enjoy trying different tech tools, and I am grateful most students have phones. We currently focus on Office 365 applications and use others such as Kahoot, Quizlet and PHET simulations.

  1. Wendy, working through the challenges of old or non working technology is something I hear from my teacher friends here in Saskatoon too. It is awesome to hear you persevere to keep the kids busy even if the technology is not always available.
