Mapping my digital use

I am not surprised that my map looks like we just took a hard right turn and sent everything flying to the left.  I often think about how much time I spend on social media and the internet in general, but how I am just observing ( visiting). I follow and keep up with multiple different accounts on social media and YouTube, but never find myself interacting with them, just watching- sounds a little creepy.

This made me realize just how separate my certain accounts are. I have always kept my emails and google account separate for work and personal, with very little overlap. For me, they serve two different purposes. I even have two instagram accounts, one open account where I share pictures of my dog and our adventures ( no pictures of me), and a private account where I share more personal ones of myself.

This brings me back to the balance of being open and sharing. I think Twitter has been my best tool for balancing the resident half and being both personal and institutional. A few years ago I use Twitter more frequently and I tried to do a mix of educational and (chosen) personal communications. I added the feed to my blog to help challenge myself to Tweet more and try to work on those connections.

I really enjoyed learning about Visitors and Residents mapping, as this is a relatively quick exercise that can lead to great discussions and reflective thought. Let me know if you have any questions.

  1. Hi Amanda!
I really liked your artistic ability in making the visual map. It’s good to know I’m not the only one who spends their time more on the observer side. The internet has a term for people like us, apparently we are called “lurkers.”
I also don’t care to comment post on any videos etc. what keeps you from posting comments on YouTube videos?

    1. Hi Alastair, I am happy to hear I am not the only lurker present- or admitting to it. In true lurker form there may be more reading this. There are a few reasons I do not post. I find with YouTube, or even Twitter I often don’t post because I am not an expert. My way of thinking is still very much in my math and science background, and I do not have enough research or experience behind me ( yet) to comment. I often take time to properly formulate my thoughts, ( math and science brain so words are not always my friend ) which causes the moment to be gone. I also dislike the repetitive comments you see and just the amount of cyber waste it makes. What are you main reasons ?

      1. For me it’s very similar. I don’t like the idea of saying anything unless it adds some kind of value. Simply saying something like “Nice video!” doesn’t carry any meaningful weight when thousands of other said basically the same thing. I like how you put it, it’s cyber waste.

But when it comes to thoughtful comments, I’m a processor. I like to have a well thought out and researched idea that doesn’t leave any or many gaps. Too many times I’ve seen people try to make profound comments only to have them torn apart by trolls or just uninformed people. With this in mind it’s hard and takes a long time to make a ‘bullet proof’ comment so as you said it, this causes the moment to be gone.

I really appreciate the artistry that went into the map as well! Very visually cool. I also really appreciated your comment about the hard right turn. When you mapped it out where you surprised with the finished product? I know that I was with my finished product.
I also like the idea of having separate social media accounts for more private postings. I have a few friends and colleagues that do the same thing and is something I am considering as well.

    1. Thanks Chad, I used a note taking app I have on my Ipad. I love the ability to doodle and add colour easily. I was not all that surprised with my final product being heavily weighted with the left hand side. I feel like I spend a lot of my time online, but I am aware that it is not often adding to what is out there. What was it that surprised you for yours?
I enjoy having the separate accounts, but if definitely adds to the things you have to do/check. I am still working on finding better organization for myself.
