Success of a good research paper can be predicated on the validity and strength of the research question or questions posed in the paper. According to York Univerity (n.d.), “a [good] research question is a clear, focused, concise, complex and arguable question around which you center your research” (pg. 1). According to Mark Regan, a good research question:

  1. Is not convoluted (understandable)
  2. Is not overreaching in breadth of topic (not too general – or irrelevant)
  3. Allows for effective experiments to proceed (if experiments are needed)
  4. Is answerable
  5. Intends to better the knowledge and understanding of the topic being explored
  6. Allows for follow-up research to take place in order to further progress within the topic
