Out of Focus Blue Wall (Snodgrass, 2013)

I have never paid attention to copyright laws until I started with the MALAT program. I have this notion that if materials are on the web, and they do not have a copyright symbol it is acceptable for public consumption.  The program has certainly opened my eyes to the realities of copyright laws and infringement. As a learner and an educator, I appreciate open-source materials.  Good information should be shared to enrich people’s lives and that there needs to be compensation for those that think it is their economic rights. Hence, this is when the balancing act transpires- the balance between users’ rights and creators’ rights.

The age of disruption mentioned in the video depicts the current challenges and opportunities that web 2.0 offers. The wealth of information and ideas that are being generated in the internet and social media can facilitate to construct new knowledge, promote creativity, and innovation. On the other hand, the issues of copyright infringement and plagiarism can occur as literary works and creative materials are mostly available on the web. The struggle to deal with the effect of new technologies and accessibility of resources are unrelenting. Perhaps as we continue with transforming digital technologies, learners and educators need to be more vigilant and knowledgeable of the intricacies of copyrights.
