Facilitation Week 8: October, 11-17

Topic: 

How might emerging education technologies such as artificial intelligence, bots, machine learning, virtual/augmented reality influence facilitation?

Learning Objective:

The weeks discussion will explore how emerging education technologies such as artificial intelligence, bots, machine learning, virtual/augmented reality can influence facilitation.  With a focus on how facilitation can be incorporated into a Virtual reality learner safety activity.

Specific objective: By the end of this week, you will be able to incorporate facilitation into a virtual reality (VR) safety activity based on the community of inquiry (COI) framework.

Learning Resources and Reading

  1.  Introduction video (recorded by team members)
  2.  Content introducing basic concepts of VR and facilitation in VR.  Introduce video and what to look for when viewing the video.
  3.  Safety training using Virtual Reality (Video)
  4. Reading: Making VR a Reality in the class room.
  5. Optional/Review Readings LRNT 528 Unit 1 for reference

Asynchronous Activity(s)

  1. Introduction to VR and facilitation in VR
  2. Participate in a discussion forum on Mattermost.
  • Using a gif express your feeling on VR in the classroom.
  • Discussion prompt: using reading,video learners are required to respond to a minimum of two posts.

Synchronous Session

Date: Thursday, October 14 @ 6 pm PDT 

  1. Facilitators introduce brief icebreaker activity.
  2. Learners will participate in a post- assessment virtual/augmented reality can influence the facilitation of safety.

Technology

  1. Email (introductory email/communication as needed) 
  2. Google docs to post course schedule, activities, instructions
  3. Mattermost
  4. BigBlueButton videoconference via Mattermost
  • Used for asynchronous discussions during the week, learners are already familiar with the platform as it is currently used.
  • Used for synchronous session, accessible from any country.
  • Asynchronous learning platform, user friendly, organized.

 

Timeline

Date Activity
Sunday, October 10th Learners will receive a welcome to the course email with pertinent information pertaining to the facilitation week. (acknowledge Thanksgiving)

Course will open for learners to access learning materials available on google docs, matter most.

Facilitators will open discussion board with gif activity (2 days to respond-due Tuesday October 12)

Monday, October 11th *Thanksgiving Holiday* Learners will have the opportunity to review course content, complete reading and watch the video.

 

Tuesday, October 12th Facilitators share/summarize results of gif activity discussion

Facilitators will post prompting questions on discussion forum (mattermost) (2 days to respond)

Initial prompt Based on facilitation readings from LRNT 528 Unit 1,(COI) and course readings provide examples of facilitation done in the sample VR experience. What is missing?

Wednesday, October 13th . Learners actively participate in discussion(s)

 

Thursday, October 14th Thursday, October 14 @ 6 pm PDT / 7 pm EDT

 

Friday, October 16th Learners will post a final reflection on discussion board, “looking ahead 10 years do you feel that VR will have a positive or negative impact on current curriculum needs?

 

Saturday, October 17th Facilitator’s summary/wrap up post based on learner final reflections and thanking for participation
