Creative Commons and Open Education with Clint Lalonde

From the video recording about Copyright by the Manager of Educational Technologies, Clint Lalonde. I have learned about Open Education, The 5 R’s, and Creative Commons:

Openness in Education means:

  • Education is effective only when it is open
  • There is no education happening if the teacher is not sharing what they know
  • Education is sharing
  • Education is being open

Thus, there are three pillars to Open Education:

  1. Open Education Resources (OER) are in the public domain. This means anyone can legally and freely copy, adapt, and share;
  2. Open Pedagogy is a set of teaching and learning practices are shared in the context of 5R (re-use, revise, remix, redistribute, retain);
  3. Open Technology is limited to open educational resources that facilitate collaborative, flexible learning, and open sharing of teaching practices.

Furthermore, Clint explained the meaning of the 5 R’s:

Retain: to make and own copies

Re-use: to use in a wide range

Revise: to adapt, modify, and improve

Remix: to combine two or more

Redistribute: to share with others

Lastly, Clint unpacked the Creative Commons concepts and symbols:

Learning is a very human activity. The more people feel they are being treated as human beings – that their human needs are being taken into account – the more they are likely to learn, and learn to learn– Malcom Knowles
