Seymour Papert was a mathematician, computer scientist, and educational theorist whose work helped establish constructionism, a view that learning occurs through actively constructing knowledge and creating things that can be explored, tested, and revised (Papert & Harel, 1991). I selected Papert because his work provides a theoretical foundation for my own interest in extended reality (XR) for rapid read/react training in firefighting and sport.
Papert’s work also challenges the assumption that there is one correct way to solve a problem. Turkle and Papert (1992, p. 48) describe the bricoleur as someone who works with the materials at hand, experimenting, adapting, and making mid-course corrections. In contemporary terms, MacGyver might be the patron saint of bricolage. More importantly, this view recognizes concrete interaction and experimentation as legitimate ways of knowing rather than treating them as inferior to abstract or formally planned approaches.
Papert also challenged the idea that educational technology should make learning easier. His concept of “hard fun” suggests that meaningful difficulty can be part of what makes learning engaging (Papert, 1998). At the same time, he warned against simply inserting technology into existing educational practices rather than allowing it to transform the learning environment itself (Papert, 1995). That warning remains particularly relevant to current XR training design: the educational question is not simply whether XR can reproduce an environment, but whether that environment allows the learner to explore, respond, and revise.
Rather than using XR to simulate physical action through controllers, I am interested in using it to manipulate the environment while preserving authentic physical movement. A volleyball player should still dive for the ball; a firefighter should still move the hose. Papert’s work raises a question that remains relevant: can technology create environments where learners physically explore, adapt, fail, revise, and ultimately learn?
