3-2-1 Reflection

(3) Three Initial thoughts on Digital Facilitation

  1. When done well, facilitation works. When it’s not, the experience is terrible and can have long term negative impacts on learning – and teaching for that matter.
  2. Digital environments, at once, must be engaging, authentic, fun, exciting, challenging, informative and of value; not just there to be there.
  3. Digital Facilitation is here to stay so we better get fantastic at doing it and receiving it.

(2) Two Questions About Digital Facilitation

  1. I feel being a great facilitator takes putting time in. How much time in? Are there steps I can do without adding hours and hours onto my workload each week? There’s fear around that because my life is, well, truly nuts.
  2. I have encountered so many people who are great at facilitation in digital environments. I feel I’m okay; I would like to be better, however, I am nervous about being overwhelmed. An example would be, how do our Profs track our contributions to the learning community? Are there analytics that do that for them or are they looking at our blogs and somehow manually tracking our contributions? Do they have a spreadsheet and tick boxes every time our name pops up? No way I would do that!

(1) One Metaphor or Simile About Digital Facilitation

NOT QUITE – Keep trying VS. YES! You’re a Great Facilitator

Stretchin’ Yawnin’ You’re losing them VS Engaged n Excited You Found Them

  1. Hi Katia,

You make some great points about digital facilitation. I agree with your sentiments surrounding being a great facilitator and having presence without spending an overwhelming amount of time doing so. Are you currently facilitating online and in a classroom? If so, what is your favorite and least favorite part of each style?

    Melissa

    1. Hello Melissa. Thank you for your comment. I am both online and in a classroom. Currently, I would say my favourite is online and I wish I could continue online vs in classroom. Online allows me to be flexible and have a better work/life balance. Fanshawe is not a welcoming place for me right now and not physically being in the building is lovely. When I am in person, my favourite piece would be seeing a student who may be struggling at the beginning of our time together, be successful and produce strong work. It’s great to witness their growth from assignment to assignment and watch them physically editing their work with confidence.
