As I attempted to map my use of technology on the visitor-resident continuum, I became aware of how much of a visitor I really am in the digital world. Even in digital activities where according to David White, one might typically take up ‘residency’, I definitely see myself as a visitor, or to use White’s metaphor; as one searching for the correct tool in a cluttered tool shed (White & Le Cornu, 2011). He was careful to point out that it is possible to stagnate on the continuum, and one end isn’t necessarily more desirable than the other. Be that as it may, it is my hope that my feeling of comfort, or being at home with these technologies might gradually shift toward residency, especially with the social networking aspects illustrated on my map. I’m also optimistic that I might be able to de-clutter and organize my ‘tool-shed’ through the ongoing practice of digital literacy, and to become more proficient in my use of practical digital tools.

Hi Laren,
Your diagram and thoughts were very interesting. I particularly enjoyed that you emphasized that it is not about filling one or another portion of the diagram, but about using the individual tools effectively.

Hi Laren
I look for a tools in the cluttered tool shed as well.
From your blog I’m interpreting that if we are not comfortable with new technologies we may not seek out new opportunities. From your readings, do you have any thoughts on what we can do to change our mindset.
My thoughts are that we have to seek out change and look for alternatives(different technology) even when what we have meets our needs. I see it as part of the learning continuum. Thanks for your post.
Thoughts?

Thanks for the comment Caroline. I suspect that you are correct, and through my readings I am actually starting to come around. Check out my latest post – it has a much more positive tone..

Hi Laren,
I liked your map as it was very clear and evident to where your technology usage lies. Were you surprised to see that you fell under more of the “Visitor realm”? When I saw your map I realized I forgot about YouTube… how was that possible? I also love that you still use hotmail, so many people have forgotten about the gold that was our hotmail accounts and if my hotmail account was not a nickname I had in junior high, I would still be using it.

Thanks for the comment Kerry – you have me laughing at myself and my hotmail.
