After mapping my use of digital technology, I was surprised how my personal / professional life as a Hygienist and my personal / professional life as an instructor differ. I use Facebook for networking in the Dental field and reaching out to fellow Dental professionals within Canada and the USA. I have never used it in the capacity of an instructor or connecting with my current students. Twitter and LinkedIn are used more towards networking in the educational aspect, as it allows me to connect with individuals I meet at conferences. I use my iPhone for every aspect of my life, as much as I try to keep my work life and personal life separate, they defiantly all overlap in the digital world. I also have realized that my use of online shopping has significantly increased over the past month, this included shopping for essential items as well as those items that are wants in life. I know that as I settle into my new “normal” my use of digital technology will increase, and my current map will have significant changes.
Great map, Cheryl! I love how you’ve used visuals throughout design, rather than going strictly data. I find I always revert to strict data mode on things like this and they end up a bit boring.
When you finished your map and had taken some time to think about it, did you discover anything that you wanted to change/adjust about your use of digital technology?
Hi David,
Thank you!
I find I am a Visual person I think it has a lot to do with me staring in mouths and cleaning teeth for many years lol
Everyday I find I go back to my map and see if I would do something different, I am sure come next week I will make some changes, my plan is to track them along the way. I am sure there will be changes over the next year with adjusting to the new “normal”.
Cheryl,
Your map looks amazing. I love it. I am always shocked by how post-secondary education uses Facebook for professional means as it is such a taboo subject in my area. I notice you are on Twitter. I am attempting to become more active on Twitter myself – so, I am going to drop you my handle.
@MichaelBMacKay
Do with it what you will.
With the pleasantries out of the way… I see that you brought up significant changes to your use of digital technologies. If I remember correctly, you use Brightspace for work. Do you think you will become a resident with Brightspace, or will you branch out to other platforms/tools? If you have some tools other than Brightspace, what platform/tools are you eyeing?
Hi Mike,
Thank you, I find I am more of a visual person and I like my colours helps me to organize information and to memorize it.
I find I use Facebook more for networking with other healthcare professionals and not so much with my students I seem to have two identities in the digital world, Cheryl the Hygienist and Cheryl the Instructor. Our school platform is Brightspace and I don’t think right now they will change that, however I may have a win and we may start using black board collaborative. I am hoping they make the change for September, fingers crossed they cross over to the dark side lol . I am really finding Zoom is not all that great for lecture purposes with 100 students. I was not all that active on twitter user until a few weeks ago, however I am enjoying some of the tweets. How he heck do you get your picture to show on your profile, I have tired and it still shows blank it is very annoying….any advice ??
